"You should have seen how adorable it was!"
"Farra, you've been going on about how this boy asked this girl to the dance. Give it a break, will yah?" My bestfriend's grandmother rolled her eyes with a slight scoff that tumbled out of her thin, wrickled lips, but soon grinned at farra in adoration.
"But Grandma, it was really cute-"
"We know, we know," Farra's grandma chuckled, as she slowed down, and put on the breaks as we approached a steep hill.
"You told us the story about four times," I reminded her, and pulled my hair up out of my face with a hair elastic.
"I have not!"
"Yes, you have!" I sat up in my seat, and flick Farra's ear lobe.
She reaches her hand to her earlobe with a scoul, her jaw slightly ajar. I smiled brightly at her grandma. By the expression on her face, I could tell she was thankful I made her stop talking.
I slouch back into my seat in the back of the car, "So, where are we going?"
Farra's grandmother, Grandma Beth, took us to the mountins for a vacation this summer. Although it has been a week, it feels like a couple of days, to be reasonable. The very first night we arrived, Farra and I camped out outside of the cabin and ate S'mores all night. We laughed at each other the following morning with marshmellow and chocolate on our faces. Last night, or evening, Grandma Beth took us Ziplining off of a mountin cliff onto a smaller one. Tonight, I don't know what we are doing.
"Well, Avery, it's a surprise," Grandma Beth winked at me through the rearview mirror, then focused her eyes back on the road. She isn't real old, 55 maybe, and in extreme health for her age.
"I'm getting car sick," Farra spoke up, her lips in an odd shape of disgust.
"I'm sorry, just this last curve," almost right as she finished the sentence, a blue car swung around the corner on the wrong side of the road. The tires of Grandma Beth's truck screeched like a broken fan, trying to avoid the blue car hurling toward us.
Panic took over my body and I shuddered in fear. I covered my head with my defenseless arms, hoping I would still be breathing tomorrow. Hope is the only thing keeping me calm. Hope is the only thing shoving the tears down my throat.
I ball up as the car bounces off the road, wheeling itself down the hill, slamming itself into anything, everything. Trees shatter the windows, front windshield, and rearview mirrors, all but the massive back windshield. I find myself reaching for Farra, grabbing her hand. Tears stain her cheeks, blood races down the ear that I flicked. Tears build up in my eyes like a bulwark against life.
Hope.
I swallow the tears and look at Farra. Her blue-green eyes find mine and she mouths something I could not read at first. 'I love you' she mouthed, then I noticed she wasn't mouthing anything, she was screaming it. Pushing the lining of the car away as far as she can. Screaming for safety. Screaming for mercy. Screaming for hope.
I frantically shake my head, something forcing our hands apart. I heard a tree pop, louder than thunder, and it threw me back. My head collided with the windshield and Farra's screams became faint.
I couldn't see anything, Feel anything. But I heard everything. I heard the car stop, the sobs of Farra, the quiet voice of Grandma Beth, the microphones of the policeman the static of their walkie talkies. I heard the sirens of ambulances' and fire trucks blend together.
Then Farra did the worst thing possible. She took her thumb and index finger, slowly closed my eyes, and sobbed over my body.
That's when I let go.
That's when I lost hope.
