Chapter Eighteen

"An utterly desolate landscape, an overwhelming hallucination can make one feel that oneself, as an individual human being, is slowly being unraveled. The surrounding space is so vast that it becomes increasingly difficult to keep a balanced grip on one's own being. The mind swells out to fill the entire landscape, becoming so diffuse in the process that one loses the ability to keep it fastened to the physical self. The sun would rise from the eastern horizon, and cut it's way across the empty sky, and sink below the western horizon. This was the only perceptible change in our surroundings. And in the movement of the sun, I felt something I hardly know how to name: some huge, cosmic love."

Haruki Murakami, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle

Chapter Eighteen

The stillness in the air was eerie as I stood there, unharmed. The car didn't hit me. Pain didn't exist in that moment. Not a drop of blood was drawn from my blue veins. None of it made sense, and the theories and questions were burning through my brain whilst searching for answers, but there wasn't a reasonable explanation for anything.

My breath became uneven as it disappeared into the air, and the water running down my cheeks froze against my pale face as the wind stroked my cheeks with ghostly gestures that made me tremble. my ankles burned with agony from gravity continuously forcing me back onto the flat concrete.

How am I not injured?

I reached my apartment and slammed the door behind me, slapping pain in the face making the plates in the cabinets shutter in disgust. Shouts became louder and hugged me in its terrifying pain. the prints of past blood stains stamped onto me as it pulled away, and my long, slim fingers touched it. it took my memory back to an American Airport. I saw a teenage boy, eighteen maybe, with tears piled up in his eyes, but with a radiant smile. I remember feeling warmth when he hugged me, and his blonde hair painting my wet face when he pulled away. His voice was distinct. "I'll miss you, Avery," played from his lips in an eerie lullaby. His voice stopped and his face fell towards earth. With a shaking hand, he pointed towards my beating head and whispered "What did you do to yourself?"

A blood curdling scream left my lungs, but didn't come near to my thoughts. His face smiled, and he held out his hand.

"Hi. My name is Niall."

My breaths became short and my legs started to weaken. "Zayn! Oh gah, Zayn! Help me, please!"

Niall's face fell once more and his voice became smaller, yet more aggressive, "I could help you. let me help you!"

The tears refused to stop and my gasps became shallow.

"Thank you Niall," left my small lips, then everything darkened.

"Avery, stop it!" I gasped and looked at Zayn starring down at me with glossy eyes and knitted eyebrows. his chest rose quickly with every breath he took. His hands were placed on either side of me, and his cross necklace hung above my nose, occasionally touching my sheaded tears.

"I-I don't k-"

"You scared me, Avery, " Zayn's voice cracked and he took in a shaky breath of hot air. The atmosphere between us thickened as he remained hovering my small, weak body, old tears mixing with mine. His hand met his face for a split second and he croaked, "What happened, love?"

My heart jumped and my hands started to sweat. "I don't know, Zayn. I swear, I don't know."

Finally, I felt the stars sadden, and for an instant, I felt Mom and Dad cry.
