I decided that moping around the house was not the best way of spending the summer, it was making me more and more unhappy- and gain a few pounds, which was beside the point. Therefore I took the decision to go to work at the bakery for more shifts, I'd rather be doing something useful than just being my moody little self. Mrs Potter was more than delighted, since Lucy went for her holiday in Portugal and most of her workers had gone away for the summer as well, she was the most understaffed she had ever been. It was fun being able to have the whole bakery (practically) to myself during the early mornings, seeing as the bakery hadn't been as popular in the morning than it was in the evening, that was when the usual heat of the rush started.
Some days were definitely better than others, those were the days when I didn't have an unpleasant visit from the people I knew from school. There was many rumours on how myself and Ryan broke up, some so ridiculous that the person who had made it up must've been high on an illegal substance at the time, it made it very hard to keep my promise with Ryan. It was the sympathy that I hated the most, the extra tips and the small smiles, it aggravated me because they acted as if they knew everything, but they didn't. How were they to know I was going to break up with him the next day, or that he was gay? These people didn't know what I was going through, these people didn't even like me at all. Then when they think I've been warmed up enough, they would ask the same repetitive question to the unsolved puzzle of the year, "How did you and Ryan break up?". This is usually when I curse very loudly, and tell them to mind their own business, which does the trick most of the time.
That's why I love the anonymous faces, they treat me like I'm normal, and I can forget about everything. So when I see Jennifer cat walk into the bakery like she owned the place, you can only imagine my reaction. She walks confidently straight towards me, slowly removing her sparkly ray bans, and sucking any chance of happiness in my soul.
"One red velvet cupcake and make it snappy." Jennifer flips her hair, and she is so absorbed into her phone that she doesn't notice me.
"Sure, one red velvet coming up!" I say as chirply as I can. Jennifer just grunts in response and goes to a table, I run towards the kitchen, putting the order up and thanking the heavens that she didn't notice me. After a few minutes the cupcake is produced and I rush to Jennifer hoping the sooner I give her the order, the sooner she would leave. Unfortunately, I trip over my laces and send the cupcake flying, flying, flying into Jennifer's phone! Jennifer takes one look at her phone smothered in white icing and red sprinkles, and instantly starts to wail, a high-shrilly-painful-to-hear wail. I run up to her and in the panic take her phone to the desk and start to wipe the phone with a tissue, I wipe it so hard that the damage is unnoticeable, however I've blown my cover as Jennifer is suddenly gleaming.
"Jade? Is that you?" Jennifer says with her eyebrows raised, mocking her confusion. I turn myself around to face Jennifer, plastering a smile on my face and placing her phone in her hands.
"Yes, it's me alright. Anyways, I'll get you another cupcake on the house, I'm so sorry about your phone." I say, then I rush back out to the kitchen and place the order again. Whilst quickly wiping the sweat off my brow, I take the cupcake to Jennifer who is annoyingly grinning and waving her hands wildly at me at the back of the bakery. I steady myself from almost wanting to run in the opposite direction, and try to walk calmly to her. She bounced up and down in excitement and pulls me down next to her at the table. She pushes me with such force that I couldn't get myself back up, I give Jennifer a puzzled look, what was she up to?
"I didn't want you to escape back out again, did I?" Jennifer's grin widens, which reminded me of the big bad wolf in little red riding hood, not a good sign. I give out a little nervous laugh.
"Me? Escaping? Pfft, no! I was just... getting orders, you know, busy day and lots of stuff to do." I exasperate, Jennifer looks around the cafe and then back at me like I was crazy. That's when I realised that there was nobody else here apart from us two in the cafe.
"Right, it looks really busy," Jennifer says sarcastically, " I'm so sad to hear about you and Ryan splitting up. You and him, it was such a big surprise for everyone, how tragic that the fairytale had to end so soon and with such a big crash." My blood starts to boil, everyone knew Jennifer was the most curious about myself and Ryan's relationship, since she had spent years to try and seduce him, but after failure after failure, she soon gave up. I bets she's over the moon now that we've broken up.
"It really did seem like a fairytale didn't it? I mean you were nothing and then with Ryan you became something- someone. And now you're back here cleaning cupcake off my phone, how weird! Things change so fast, sometimes I can't even catch up." She cackles loudly, whilst all I do is glare, feeling my cheeks burn up.
" No, I don't really think anything has changed. I was me back then, and I'm still me right now. But yes, I've definitely grown as a person, I think that's a part of life- maturing and growing up. Obviously some people still haven't reached that stage of life yet." I smirk back at Jennifer, who starts huffing in rage, I always knew how to rub her up the wrong way.
"Well now that Ryan's back onto the single rack someone can finally meet up to the standards that he deserves, which you most obviously, like, weren't. You were just a pathetic little excuse of a girlfriend, and I am so filled with joy that he has learned from the errors of his way and has finally seen sense. I have no idea what he saw in you when he asked you out, but I do know that he's probably never going to come back for the trash that you are." I stare at Jennifer dumbfound in anger, how could that evil little rat say such ghastly things to my face. Jennifer clearly is overjoyed with my silence and takes her bag and her phone and starts to leave the bakery, her cake untouched and the click clack of her heels slowly becoming quieter. Just then I thought of the best evil come back. I grab the cupcake, hands trembling in rage and walk up to the door where she just left the bakery.
"Hey, you forgot your cake!" Jennifer turns around flabbergasted and the next few moments occur in slow motion in front of my eyes. I throw the cake as vigorously as I can towards Jennifer's face, it slowly reaches its destination completely creaming the entire target-and they said I was bad at PE- whilst the target looks at me in complete shock. First there was just utter silence as Jennifer catches up with reality, then the string of screaming abuse starts to make its way towards me, but I don't wait for her to finish as a I grab daisy (the bicycle) and start peddling as hard as I can, Mrs Potter is going to kill me. Oh well it was so worth it!
