Tyler felt refreshed after his long walk to school. He took in a deep breath and walked to his first class, which luckily didn't include Josh. He spent the first two lessons fidgeting in his seat, anxiously waiting for lunch to approach. He knew he had nowhere to hide, Josh would be looking for him. That kind of comforted Tyler a little, knowing that someone knew he existed, but was that a good thing? Tyler knew what Josh would say to him. It would be something like don't you dare tell anyone that I was talking to you, ok!
The bell shook Tyler out of his daydreams. Knowing what was coming, he picked his bag up and plodded to his finale lesson before lunch. The time went slow, which was good I guess but it only made his anxiety worse. He wanted to throw up and fade into the walls. He tried to distract himself by doodling stuff that he liked on the almost-full front page of his notebook, but he couldn't concentrate. In what felt like hours, the bell finally rang, unfortunately.
Tyler slowly and anxiously walked to the cafeteria. After grabbing his lunch he fast walked to his usual, lonely table, eyes focused on the ground, not wanting to be noticed. He decided to eat fast and then hide in the bathroom the rest of the time.
"Hey, there you are! I've been looking everywhere for you." Came a warm voice coming to sit down opposite Tyler.
Tyler lifted his head to see a smiling, cute face peering back at him. He swallowed in relief seeing that Josh wasn't mad at him, and sitting next to him in a public place.
"Where did you go yesterday?" Josh asked concerned. "I wanted to get to know you."
"I uh. I had to get home..."
"Oh ok."
"You should go, you probably don't want to be seen with me."
"What? No! Of course I do. You helped me man. I came to thank you."
"Oh, really?"
"Yeah! I can't thank you enough bro."
Tyler had a big smile on his face. Finally he felt wanted.
"Hey," Josh said, "to show my thanks, do you want to hang out tomorrow after school, watch a movie or something so I can get to know you a bit better and become friends?"
Oh my god Tyler thought, Josh wants to be my friend? MY friend?
"Uh sure." Tyler said nervously. "That sounds great."
Josh was about to say something but was cut off by the shouts and laughter coming from the table where Josh usually sits. Tyler caught a flash of anxiety in Josh's eye and remembered what Josh told him.
"Just breathe and be yourself." Tyler assured Josh. "It'll be ok. I promise"
Josh flashed a smile at Tyler and said "thanks dude, I'd be lost without you."
And with that, he was gone back to his table.
Tyler's heart was racing in his chest. Things were finally going his way. He had made a friend and it happened to be the cutest boy on the earth. He couldn't stop grinning to himself as the last words Josh spoke to him replayed in his mind. He finally felt like a someone. Tyler hadn't felt true happiness for a long time, and boy it felt good!
The last few classes flew by and no useful information that Tyler probably should've paid attention to went in. His mind was replying Josh's words he spoke in the cafeteria. It was a short exchanging of words but it meant an awful lot to Tyler. He'll never forget that moment. His life was taking a flip for good. What's in the past is gone and it's only going to go up from here. Or is it?
