Let Her Go

The hardest part is not goodbye,
The hardest part is not learning why--
The only person to truly know you,
Was the one who didn't know what to do,
When she had to go away,
You told her that you'd always stay--
Next to her heart, where you should be,
But she wore it on her sleeve,
Because although she hadn't learned,
How someone could love her burned--
Scorched, and pained, and aching soul,
In some time, she'd come to know--
The girl who loved her to no end,
The one whose smile she couldn't mend,
Because, in truth, it was that girl,
Who struggled with the constant whirl--
Of life without someone to fight for,
But then she met her lovely, white shore,
Her beach, her shell, and all the sea,
That was what she was to me,
But when she truly had to go,
I told her then that now I know--
Of the future that we missed,
The one where every night we kissed--
To remind us of the love we shared,
And all the simple ways we cared.
I told her it would be alright,
We'd both go on and find our light--
Another one to hold us near,
Another one to whisper dear--
Quiet, soft, and sweet nothings,
Another one who gently sings--
The melodies of lullabies,
The one who'd never say goodbye.
And as she turned to walk away,
I told her it would be okay,
That even if we couldn't be--
Together now, to be happy,
We'd do the best for one another,
And move on without each other.
And so I shall repeat my words,
For now I know how much it hurts,
To say goodbye,
And to learn why,
But never will you truly know,
What pain is 'til you let her go.
