01. Louis
The misty rain turned into a drizzle and then soon, it brought along a full-on storm. Water droplets hit the window I was sitting next to in the dinky, run down diner. I stare at the glass, watching the rain drops race down. As a child I'd always root for specific droplet. The one that reached the bottom first, won.I took a sip of my coffee and a forkful of the apple pie I bought and stared intently at the mysterious girl sitting on front of me.
I had flagged down a taxi when Radley and I had walked off the bridge, both still very much alive. I told the driver to take us to a coffee shop but he gave me an annoyed look. Apparently, the only place that was open at three in the morning and served coffee to maniacs was this diner. Right outside of Times Square.
"You weren't really going to do it, were you?" I whisper, running my thumb over the rim of my coffee mug.
"I would have. If you didn't stop me," she mutters, taking a forkful of the cheese omelette sitting on front of her, "why'd you do it anyways? Why you stop me? I don't even know you; other than your name and the fact that you have a very sexy accent."
I smirk at her remark. In the past hour we have been together, I've come to realize that she was very straight forward with everything.
"I know what it feels like to be in the position you were in. Believe it or not, I almost jumped off the London Bridge."
She nods in understanding, "So, what's your life story?"
"Life story?"
"Yeah, like, where do you work? Do you have hot friends? Girlfriend? Age? Family? Anything about you, pretty much."
"You seriously don't know who I am?" I raise an eyebrow.
Radley shakes her head, "Should I?"
"You know my name, Louis Tomlinson. From the other side of the pond. Originally from Doncaster but I recently bought a place in London. I have four best mates and we're in a band together. One Direction? You must've heard of us? I guess you can consider them as my 'hot' friends."
"Oh, the snotty British, plus Scottish, boys," she rolls her eyes, "I'm not impressed, if that's what you were going for."
"Oh, darn! I thought I had you floored!" I chuckle, "He's Irish, by the way. And we are not snotty, love. At least, I don't think so."
"I was close. Scottish, Irish, whatever," she scrunchs up her nose, "why are you in New York City?"
"I am here on a break that management said is mandatory for me."
"Mandatory? What happened? Were they annoyed by your sexy accent?"
"I totally wish that was the reason," I smile, "no. I haven't been myself lately."
"I see. Age?"
"Soon to be twenty-two. Yourself?"
"Just turned twenty-one. Family?"
I shake my head, "Sorry, I don't talk about my family."
"Fair enough. Girlfriend?"
"Broke up with her about four months ago?"
"Why'd you brake up with her? She turn out to be a lesbian or something?" Radley asked.
"Nope. Cheated on me about four times? Maybe five."
"Whoa! Skank alert! You can do so much better."
"I know."
Our conversation was so 'to the point'. It felt good but very odd at the same time.
"What about you, Radley?" I ask, "Interesting name, by the way.""Thanks, my grandma named me. She was a hippie and she met a dude on the road named Radley," she shrugs, "and I'm not telling you anything about me."
"That's not fair! I told you an abundance of things about me!"
She gives me a stern look but I was determined to at least figure out what happened to her face. I reach over and stroke her bruised cheekbone with the knuckle of my index finger. She flinches a bit, making me regret touching her immediately.
"I'm sorry. What happened here?"
"My boyfriend hit me. That was the last straw so I made my way to the bridge. I don't want to be around people who don't respect or love me anymore, you know what I mean?"
I nod in agreement, "Has he done it before?"
"Yes, many times."
"Do your parents know?"
"They died three years ago so I moved in with him. They've never met him."
"Why'd you continue living with him?"
"I needed a place to stay because I sold my parents house. Like, I have no where to go anymore. Parents are dead, I have no relatives that live near by. The ones that do live here don't want anything to do with me and I am definitely not going back to that asshole."
"Your parents must've left you with some money, right? I mean, their life insurance or something?"
"They put in their will that they'd give it all to my cousin. That jackass is so successful in life, I don't understand why he got it. I mean, I could've used all that money to make something out of myself by going to school but they left me with nothing. I guess you could say they didn't really like me?" She shruggs. Her parents- god bless those souls- were complete dicks to her. She yawns and looks at me, "I rented out a place when they were alive but I learned that I can't stay anywhere by myself for a long period of time. It scares me. I get so paranoid. That is also one of the reasons I stayed with him."
I lean back into my chair and slightly turn my head to the right, rubbing the stubble on my chin with my thumb. Why was I so intrigued by her?
"Stay with me?" I blurt.
"You don't even know me. We met each other over an hour ago, where you pretty much stopped me from killing myself."
"I know that your name is Radley Davenport and I also know that you do not have a permanent residence at the moment. Please, let me take you with me. I want to help you."
Radley bit at her bottom lip. She was quite adorable. Actually, she was very attractive. Beauty was all I saw from every angle I looked at her. I could see myself with someone like her on the future. Someone exactly like me but so different.
"I'll feel bad then. You're such a big celebrity and I don't want you to feel that I'm taking advantage of you."
I scoff, "I'm trying to get away from this celebrity life. I've had enough of it, to be honest. You wouldn't be taking advantage of me, love. I might just be of you because I think I need to hang around regular people to bring myself out of my arse."
"Regular people?" She raises an eyebrow and stands up, "You're right. You need to bring yourself out of your 'arse' because listen here, you and I are both human. You shouldn't be considered more than a regular person as I am. You can take your offer and shove it down your throat. You're self conceited and I don't think I want to be around that. Goodbye."
She turns to leave but I grab her wrist, "Wait, love. Just give me a chance, yeah? I'm trying not to be self conceited but how am I supposed to do that with self conceited people that are consistently around me? I meant regular person as in a non-famous, down to earth type. I don't think I am higher above you, darling, I really don't. I would do anything to be in your position. Not caring about pleasing millions of people or looking good for the magazines. I want to live a normal life and I only have two months to do that. I have two months to 'get over my problems'."
"So, I'll be helping you in a way while you're giving me a place to stay?"
"Basically, yes."
"Deal. Take me to your place then. I need to sleep. It has been a long day, Louis Tomlinson."
"Thank you, Radley," I smile at her, "wait, you don't have any clothes."
"Well, no shit. I wasn't planning on being alive right now so I didn't pack anything."
"I guess we're going shopping tomorrow." I lead her out of the diner and flag down a taxi.
I could sense that this trip was going to be one heck of a roller coaster ride.
