"This is not a good time for a party," I lash out at my father. "The longer it takes for us to track this guy down the longer Mia is still in danger. And now you want to invite a ton of people into your house? That's like walking up to the basturd and handing him an invitation yourself!"My father grins. "Exactly."
I throw my hands up. "You're outta your fucking mind. No, we aren't bringing in outsiders! Not while she is here!"
He rolls his eyes. "Don't you see? If he knows you're here and she is here, he will come. And when he does, he will be out of his limits. On our ball feild."
"Use her as bait? Fuck no!"
"With the amount of people that we will have here no harm will come to her. Chris will have phone number that belongs to the credit card soon enough. During the party, call it. See if someones pocket rings. If not then continue you're search but if it does you have another lead."
Dammit! I want to hit something, hard. I don't like this. It's a stupid plan.
"And besides that, I think it would give the ladies something to look forward too. This place was nice when they first came here but I'm sure they are becoming very stir crazy. It's worth a try, anyway. If he doesn't show, then at least the women have been able to enjoy themselves a little."
To be honest, I don't care how bored they are, as long as they are safe. Having a big lavish party is not my main focus right now. But I can't lie, it would be nice to have a evening to enjoy. Mia will want some fun. Even if I still have to be on guard the entire time at least she might be able to enjoy herself. Mawmaw would love it even if she would still be a little worried.
"How many people are you planning on inviting?" I ask.
"Everyone we know. But this won't be like at the night club. For this we spare no expense. All or nothing."
The last time this house has had any type of party was for my mother's birthday. That was six days before she was murdered. Four weeks before my father found her killers.
"I'm guessing this means I will need to get a tux."
He nods. "Yes."

Mia of course, loves the idea of a party. She tells me to relax, even I have explained to her the danger. She thinks that because of me being so close she will be safe from any harm. I hope she is right. Mia, Jessy, and Mawmaw take off to start planning. I don't even bother to tell them that this party will be huge. Not a little get together by any means.
My father will explain that.
I call in Chris and Nate.
And Oscar.
They meet me downstairs in my father's office."He wants to throw a party?" Chris can't believe it.
"Yeah. So, I want complete security. My father's men will be told. And you two, need to keep an eye out too."
Oscar puts up a hand. "You mean three."
I glance over at him. "You, my little friend, you are to stay with Mia. Don't leave her side for a second, unless I tell you too. You have the most important job of all of us."
Oscar's eyes widen and he nods his head. I reach down to ruffle up his golden curls. "That's a good, lad."
"Keep an eye on Jess too."
Oscar looks over at Chris. They have grown close, these two, and I'm glad of it. Nate still doesn't much care for the kid but he keeps his mouth shut about it. Smart man.
The guys understand the jobs I have given them. I leave them to go in search of Mia again. As I walk the halls of the house, I can't stop myself from realizing how far we have come. Mia and I. Things are different but in a good way. She balances me out better than I would have ever thought. She truly does being out the best in me. The good, I thought I didn't have in me. I never thought that I could be this connected to someone. Far beyond, just a physical connection. She sees past my bullshit.
Her body is healing.
Soon she will be able to run around as if nothing had ever happened.
But I will never forget what almost happened.
That I had nearly lost her.
I find her, in the livingroom, surrounded by Jess, Mawmaw, and my father. I don't bring any attention to myself. I simply want to watch her face light up as she day dreams of the party. She has become everything that matters in my world.
My father spots me but doesn't say anything. He knows that I'm enjoying watching her delight. I think that in a way, he understands me better now. Or at least he understands how I feel about Mia. Because he had cared so much for my mother. And I too have grown to understand him a little better. I get it now.
If something happens to Mia, my whole world would stop. I would walk this world as a dead man. All the life would be sucked out of me. I understand that feeling a little. It's the way I felt when I lost my mother. If I were to lose Mia too.... I couldn't handle that.
I gaze at them all. They look like a happy little family. All laughing and excited for the planning. Oscar stands beside me, I hadn't even noticed him walk up."Whatcha looking at?" he wants to know.
"Nothing, kid. Nothing."
Oscar shrugs his shoulders and joins them. Chris shows up eventually too. He walks up behind Jessy and pulls her to him. They are close. I know how Chris feels about Jessy. Even if Mia and I haven't.... God, we haven't even fucked and I'm thinking like this. I've changed and I know it is all because of her.
