"Detective Owens, what a pleasant surprise," I greeted as I opened my front door. I was having dinner with a serial killer until a cop interrupted it. Yeah, my life was turnt all the way up... note the sarcasm. Detective Jon Owens had a no nonsense attitude and zero tolerance for reporters. I plaster on the brightest smile possible. And his very hard and impassive expression splits into a polite grin.
"Miss Simmons-
"Please call me Mona, Detective." I subtly bat my eyelashes.
"Okay. Mona. May I come in?"
I look him straight in the eye. "I was getting ready to hit the sack," I share.
He smiles again, his blue eyes lighting up. That was something I didn't see very often. I guess many years on the force and seeing so much has taken a lot out of him. The detective was in his late thirties possibly early forties. He was handsome–I guess– tall and lean. Older men weren't my type. "It's about Death Trap," he said, allowing the words to linger for a moment. He knew I would be interested. I try not to break eye contact, but hearing his name beckoned me to look in his direction. Luckily, Death Trap was nowhere in sight.
"What about him?" I ask, still not inviting the detective in.
The detective breaks eye contact, looking beyond me and then down at my very revealing top. Normally, I would get upset about him ogling my boobs, but there was something I wanted- to know what he knows about "Death Trap". "The local police have been told to lay off the case," Owens shared.
"Why–wait hold that thought," I said and dashed for my pamphlet, ignoring the fact the subject of the matter was posted near my fridge like a sexy statue. Did I say sexy? Yeah, I'm losing my mind. "Okay, go on..."
"The FBI has been on the case for some time. Our department didn't even know the sneaky fucks were investigating the case as well. Anyways, turns out D.T. has been killing... for years... across state lines..." My hand on the pen froze and I gazed up into the detective's eyes. There was something off-putting by the way they gleamed as he spoke of D.T. Maybe it's just me.
"Why are you telling me this?" I couldn't resist asking.
"You're going out with me for lunch tomorrow. I'll pick you up at around noon."
"I'm not-
"Mmm, sweet thing, are we going to catch that movie or nah?" D.T. arms slid around my waist, pulling me back against him. He kissed my neck and shoulder. It took all my might not to shiver. I realize Detective Owens was watching us.
I felt the temperature in the room drop several degrees as the two men sized each other up. I looked up at D.T. who was giving Owens a look that chilled even me.
"Who are you?" DT asked.
"Who are you?" Owens countered.
"I'm the boyfriend, but I asked you first." DT's tone was hard just like his demeanor.
"There's been a report of a strange man lurking around. Funny how you match the description." This could be my ticket away from DT. but for some reason I didn't trust Owens.
"Oh really, well, I should be lurking around since I own these complexes to make sure everything is up to code."
What?! I need to move asap.
"Show me some I.D.," Owens demanded.
"I don't have to show you anything. As a matter of fact I can report you for harassing me and my girlfriend. Does your director know you haress women at their jobs and at their homes?"
Owen's lips presses into a thin line. DT. Got 'em
"Good night, Detective Owens." He slammed the door in Owen's face.
"He won't bother you no more."
"Yeah, one down and one still to go."
He scoffed and rolled his eyes. "Don't be silly. You want me around. I've made your life that much more interesting. Before me, you were bored and lonely."
I moved away from him. Close proximity to D.T. was disturbing.
"You keep breaking into my house, that's some way to sweep a girl off her feet-
"You so want me-
"What makes you so sure of that?"
"Body language, sweet thing," he pointed out. "I'm very good at reading a woman's body, her desires. Yours is written all over-
"Tell me something, who are you." I had to change the subject real quick. This conversation was taking a turn for the worst. D. T. was really delusional if he thought I wanted him. The nerve of him to think that just because he's fine as hell.
He stalked closer. I moved back. "The man that has a key to your house." Wait... what? "Besides, we already had this conversation. I tell you anything you want to know if you give me-
"I need a drink if I'm going to put up with you." That was the problem. I shouldn't. He wasn't going to leave so I pretty much had no other choice.
I opened my cabinet pulling out a glass and headed for my mini bar. I grabbed the bottle of Hennessey. It was my daddy's favorite drink. My parents had a beautiful relationship. A perfect example of how a relationship should be. Mackayla and I were fortunate enough to grow up in a home full of love.
We may have sometimes took it for granted. And when they passed I buried my grief in college. Different people have different ways of coping with grief. The way Mackayla handled hers was running away.
I poured my drink, knocking it back quickly.
Six-three of sexiness just stood off to the side watching me with sculpted arms folded across his chest, leaning against the wall.
"You should really slow down with the drinking," he suggested.
"Fuck you." The nerve of him to tell me what to do in my own house.
He began to pace a circle around me like I was a little lamb in the presence of a very hungry wolf. It was a move to remind me he was bigger and stronger. And I shouldn't be comfortable in his presence, I told myself. "Tsk, tsk, tsk, Mona, sweet little thing, I'll be happy oblige." His tone of voice got me thinking about things I shouldn't, but it couldn't be helped.
Suddenly I wanted to play his game. I wet my bottom lip, it was an invitation. His grey eyes darkened with lust, promising me sexual satisfaction that no other man could give me, but him. "Oh, really? Show me.” I tell him. He cocks a dark brow. I let my words sink in. Eyes were like crystals in the Arctic. Then they dropped to my feet and swept over my body hungrily, possessively. He moved behind me and placed his hands on my hips.
"I'm all for giving a woman what she wants." His voice was silkier than satin, deeper even. He spun me around and backed me against the wall then dropped to his knees before me, giving a wolfish grin before his head went under my skirt... Floating on a cloud of shame, I didn’t stop him...
