I was at the local grocery store on a mission. Ever since I hit five weeks I was craving sliced pineapples like crazy. I actually got morning sickness this morning and it was a bitch. I hauled ass to the fruit section. And just as I'm about to get my fix...
“Mona,” a woman called. I gazed over my shoulder to see that pretty blond woman, Carla. The mysterious one I met in the parking lot of Dove City Times a month ago. She wore an old t-shirt and really short shorts. How old was she? Like thirty?
“Carla,” I said.
Her blue eyes lit with surprise. “You remember me?”
“I don't forget people,” I told her. She frowned looking around.
“Can we talk somewhere, like at Starbucks.”
I smile. The funny thing is, I was actually going to call her. Of course I was curious about what she knew of Jericho. It's just that so much has happened over the past weeks. “Sure, after I get my pineapples. Been having major cravings,” I slipped. Inwardly, I cringed realizing my error.
Carla takes one look at the pineapples then she notices the wedding band on my finger. She grabs my hand. “Oh my God, you married him.” She had the nerve to look happy with tears misting her eyes. I snatch my hand away saying nothing.
After I purchased my pineapples, Carla and I sat within Starbucks. She ordered herself a iced coffee. “I’ve known Jericho and Trenton ever since we were kids. I was the girl next door,” She shared giving a sad smile.
“Oh?”
She nods and pulls out a picture from her wallet showing me. I nearly gasp. “That’s Trenton and that's Jericho.” If it hadn’t been for her pointing that out I wouldn't have been able to tell the difference. Trenton was Jericho’s twin brother. In the picture they stood side by side, smiling at the camera wearing camouflage and holding machine guns. They were somewhere I couldn't identify, but looked deep within a jungle. “Trenton and I fell in love and got married at eighteen. Young newlyweds.” She held a hand over her mouth as tears fell down her cheeks. “I’m sorry,” she whispered.
“It’s okay, Carla. I’m listening.”
“And then Jericho convinced Trenton to join the Special Forces. They were inseparable and Trent would follow Jericho to the ends of the earth. They joined and never returned.” She laughed humorlessly. “It’s been twelve years. The military will not tell us a thing.Their mother and I have been looking for years. Just recently I found Jericho here by accident. Trenton on the other hand has been missing for so long... I gave up...” She wiped tears from her eyes.
Carla shared how their twelve year old son, Trenton Jr. birthday was last week and that he has never met or seen his father except through pictures. Jericho doesn't want anything to do with her. “He came to my house and threatened me.” She grabbed my hand. “His mother Elizabeth is begging to see him again. She needs to see him.”
“What can I do?” At the mention of Jericho’s mother it changed everything. I wanted to reunite a mother with her son.
“This won’t be easy, Mona. I won't lie to you. When I saw Jericho the night he threatened me I knew the Special Forces changed him in more ways than one. He- he couldn't even tell me what happened to Trent. I don’t know if my husband is dead or alive. If you could convince him to pick up the phone to call Elizabeth that would mean the world. She just needs to know one son is alive and well.”
I went home with a heaviness in my heart. This was so troubling. What made him this way? Why would he threaten his own sister in-law that he knew for years? She is the mother of his nephew. And why is he so estranged from his mother? There were still many things I didn’t know about him. The meeting with Carla rectified that clearly. I opened the frontdoor and the throes of a loud T.V. and men shouting enveloped me. It was coming from the den. I smirk. I forgot today was ‘Man Cave Saturday’ which meant no wives were allowed.
