Carla and I got together on a saturday and drove for three hours to her hometown, Jericho’s hometown. I hated lying to him, but it was for a good cause. I needed to do this.
“Make yourself at home,” Carla told me as we entered her cozy home. “Trenton,” she called. A boy with blond hair and those same crystal-grey eyes that resembled both his father’s and Jericho’s came running down the stairs. He was only twelve and already taller than me and I’m five-seven.
“This is Mona James, your uncle Jericho’s wife.” Trenton Jr.’s eyes widened with surprise before he smiles and stalked up, wrapping me into a warm hug.
“It's very nice to meet you, Aunt Mona,” he says.
I smile. “Likewise, Trent.”
He gazes beyond me towards the frontdoor. “Where's uncle Jerry?” Carla and I exchange glances.
“He'll come around someday," I said. Carla nods.
He gives a sad smile. “I know.” Carla shared with me how he knows about his father’s disappearance. Trenton Jr. understands it’s a possibility he may never return. Carla saw no reason to spare her son from the truth.
Carla led me into the tea room. “Before we head on over to Elizabeth's there are some things I need to warn you about,” she began. Jericho's mother Elizabeth has a weak heart and Carla didn't know how meeting me would effect her. She was lonely and Carla has been trying to liven up her world with her's and Trenton Jr.'s presence. But she's been suffering from the tragedy of her two sons for years. I kept this in mind as we pulled up to the two story manner house in which Jericho grew up.
An older woman with salt and pepper hair steps out onto the porch with a shaw wrapped around her small frame. “You ready?” Carla asked. I nod and we both exit the vehicle. The woman’s face lights up.
“Carla!” Elizabeth was very happy to see her. We reach the porch and Elizabeth takes Carla's hand and held it.
“It's nice to see you, Bess.” Carla smiled. Even though Elizabeth was probably well into her fifties, she was still a very beautiful woman and once upon a time had the face of a movie star I bet. It was clear her genes were pretty dominant because I see where Trenton and Jericho both got those rare grey eyes from and that thick dark hair. She possessed a hint of an unplacable accent, it was probably Scandinavian.
Those crystal grey eyes met mine. “And who is this gorgeous young woman,” Elizabeth asked grabbing my hand. Carla took a deep breath.
“Bess,” she began very carefully. “This is Jericho's wife, Mona.” The woman’s eyes widen in stunned surprise and placed a hand over her heart. Mouth wide open. “B-Bess, please have a seat.” We both led her onto the swing settee to sit. She stared at me for the longest moment.
“Oh my God,” Elizabeth breathed. Tears were rolling down her cheeks. Then she began to sob and pulled me into a tight hug. Me, being the pregnant emotional fool that I am I cried with her. Elizabeth broke the hug and stared into my eyes wiping her tears away. Then she laughed with joy.
“My boy always did like women with melanin in their skin. I knew from the moment he started taking a great interest in that pretty little black girl who use to ride around here on a bike delivering newspapers, all them years ago,” she said smiling. “Wasn't she one of your friends, Carla?” Carla nodded, drying her tears. “Come on, darling,” she says to me, taking my hand. “Lets go on inside.”
