Bess made both Carla and I tea and pastries. Well, I couldn't drink the tea, but I fucked them pastries up like I hadn’t ate in years. All the while, Bess gave me a secret-knowing smile and brought me more pastries. She loved all things nature. The entire house was decorated with inside plants and paintings of tropical forests. It really was lovely. She showed me Jericho’s old room. That was a totally different story. The room was painted black with skulls and bones everywhere. Posters of heavy metal bands were all over the walls. I had to laugh. Jericho was a bad boy, but intellegent, very intellegent. He was always an honor roll student. The best at everything. Bess kept his trophies on display. “It was Paul’s dying wish to see his sons,” Bess told me as her eyes filled with tears.
Paul was Jericho’s and Trenton’s father. He was diagnosed with cancer five years ago, but by the time the doctors caught it, it was too late. He never did get to see either of his sons. Elizabeth and Paul met thirty-five years ago. She was a Swedish immigrant looking to stay in the country. Paul married her so she would become legal. They ended up genuinely falling in love.
Bess showed me many photos of her family especially of Jericho's childhood. She was the only one who could distinguish her twin boys from one another, something their father couldn't even do. Then a picture of a pretty girl with long wavy hair that reached her backside and crystal-grey eyes came into view. She looked no older than five years old. Bess smiles and says, “That’s my Jada. She was the baby girl in our family. After I had my twin boys, for fourteen years I just couldn't conceive again. Then the summer of ‘98 our little pride and joy Jada was born.” Bess burst into tears.
In the summer for Jada's birthday, their father Paul, Jericho, and Trenton got together and built Jada a treehouse as a birthday gift. Unfortunately, when the treehouse was finished it was during the middle of the night when they heard her terrifying scream. Jada had fallen out of the treehouse and broke her neck. She died upon impact. It tore Jericho a part the most, Bess had said. He loved his little sister more than life itself.
Bess smiled through her tears and touched my hand. “I know you're carrying my grandbaby. You just have this glow about you. If it’s a girl, name her Jada. It would mean the world to him, I know it.”
“I will,” I agreed, wipping my tears.
“I want to ask a favor of you. I’m getting older and I know my days are numbered here on Earth.”
I nod. “Sure, anything Elizabeth.” I gave her hand a gentle squeeze.
“Please, bring my son home to me. I know it won't be easy. Carla told me he’s pretty... troubled.”
“I promise, Elizabeth, I will,” I said and meant it.
Her eyes lit up with joy as she places a hand on my stomach. “And you bring yourself and my grandbaby around more often.” I nodded and smile.
