Elvis

I was in the house an hour later when officer Steve called me ushering me  to the police station to come and identify a body they had found in a nearby bush.

I was visibly shaken and prayed silently that it  wont be her. According to the police, they had called several people from my workplace to come and identify the body but they all said I was the closest to her so I  would know if it was her or not.

I didn't waste time and jumped into my car in a rush to go and see if it was really Sandra all the same praying that it wouldn't be her. I couldn't imagine my life without her, without her constant nagging and playfulness, without her pretence of not wanting to have anything to do with me. I wiped my face as tears flowed down my face.

I was in so much rush to get to the police station to identify the body and it did not help much with the constant traffic that I kept falling into, as a matter of fact,  it was driving me mad with anxiety and apprehension.

I cursed loudly as a white car behind me in traffic suddenly sped by in a haste to ditch traffic and almost collided with my car if I hadn't quickly moved. My mom always said that,to be a driver in Ghana, you needed to watch out for other drivers around you too.

I heaved a sigh of relieve as the traffic light eventually  turned yellow and finally green. Every driver will testify to the kind of relieve and joy they experience when the traffic light finally turns green  after long hours of waiting in traffic.

I quickly sped by several cars all in a rush to get to their destination. As I drove on in anticipation and dread as well as a little kindle of hope that the corpse at the police station won't be her, a sudden loud bang  sounded and as I watched on,  I realised a tyre of the car had deflated and the rye  removed.

I quickly  pulled over beside the road and got out to check how big the damage was. I sat on the bonnet of the car once I realised that the damage was severe. Hey don't criticize me, am not a mechanic, and besides not everyone can change a tyre.

I was still there five minutes later after calling my mechanic when I spotted an approaching vehicle, thinking it was my mechanic, I waited eager to get my car fixed and to go on my way but alas, this day seemed against me because too late, I saw the car jeer towards my direction with the lightening of speed and the occupants of the car screaming themselves hoarse with fear and before I  could jump of the bonnet of the car, the approaching car dived for me, then all went black.

I woke up in a bed with several wires strapped to my hands and head. I could not move and my head felt like lead. I tried to move but realised I couldn't.  My legs felt like it didn't belong to the rest of my body. As I struggled, all in an effort to move, everything started coming to me. The road, the car that jeered of the road, and the screams of those who feared for their lives.

I also remembered why I was on that road in the first place, tears started dripping down my face as I realised I was in a hospital bed and that meant I wont be able to go and identify the said body.

It was  ages before a door opened and a woman in white, with a cap which was also white ventured into the room. I assumed she was a nurse, she smiled as she realised I was awake.

Welcome back, she said as she looked down at me with concern. How do you feel?.  I tried to smile to let her know I was okay.  Through her, I got to know that my family were phoned and they were on their way. I felt bad as I thought of how worried my family will be right now, especially my mom who got worried about me a lot, sometimes too much for her own good.

I winced as the nurse gave me a shot, she said it was for the pain. Afterwards, the rest was history.  My family might have arrived when I was napping because I woke up to find my sister on a chair beside the bed and the curtains rolled up,  which was only my sister who rolled up her curtains that way.   She sat up when she felt my movement and got up. she  smiled at me and rushed out probably to call the rest of my family.

A few minutes later, mom burst into the room with tears on her face as she run to hug me.  I winced in pain as her body made contact with mine.  She quickly apologised and went back to take the seat Sally  was occupying a moment ago.  Sally sat on the bed beside me as mom watched me closely all the same interrogating me.

As I  suspected, mom broke down in  tears again after the nurse walked into the room and informed mom that I would be staying in the hospital for some weeks until my wounds healed and I could walk.

My sister tried to comfort her which rather made her whimper the more, you know that feeling when you are crying and someone tries to comfort you, it rather makes you want cry the more.  After sometime, she calmed down and spoke to me .

my family took turns that day watching over me. Sometimes I slept off and every time I woke up, either Sally was by  me Anita was by me but most of the time it was my mom. Eventually, they had to leave as it was time for all visitors to leave the hospital.  Mom, Sally and Anita left , promising to come see me the next day.

To make everything easier for them, it was agreed that they would stay at my end until I got better and so that night, mom drove my siblings to my end after revealing to her where I kept my keys.

As I lay in bed after they  had left, I wondered where Ellen might be, it was so unlike her not to come and see me when I was in this state, and to think that of  all my three siblings, she was the closest to me.

I was also surprised my mom nor my other siblings didn't talk about her.
I had a bad feeling something was up with her but pushed it of my mind and hoped for the best.
