CHAPTER 1: Different species

"Ann get up! You don't want to be late on your first day of school."

The pounding on the door grows louder and I pull the blankets off me groaning to stop my sister's early morning torture. Yeah, I am not a morning person. Just as my feet touch the floor, my older sister barges in picking up sweats lying on the table.

"Come on get up you lazy ass. Get ready. Breakfast is on the table," Beth said smelling the clothes in my closet and putting a few into the laundry basket on her hip.

"I am already awake Beth," I rub my eyes and watch as she smelled another one of my favorite tank tops. "Ew. Don't smell my clothes, that's gross. No no no. I'm wearing that today," I say as I take my top from her hands.

"Don't 'ew' me. 'Ew' these clothes. Now don't just stand here. Go get ready. Also, can you give Lisa ride to school? Jake and I have a thing at his office."

"What is it?"

"Nothing," she replies quickly. "I mean it's a case he worked on. Jake has worked hard and it's important for him so he wants me to go with him."

"Hey, it's okay Beth. You do not have to give me explanations. I'm the one living here being a bother-"

"We are so not arguing about this again. I'm saying this for the hundredth time and I will say it a million times if I have to. You, Annabel, are my sister. We are family. I don't consider family as a burden okay? I love you, Jake loves you, Lisa loves you. So if you continue to feel this way about living here, I'll have to kick your lazy ass."

I laugh and hug her for what she said. "I love you Beth."

"Love you too little sis. As much as I want to hug you and shower you with my sister love, I don't want you and Lisa to be late for school. Now go. Hurry up."

"Aye aye captain."

I would hate to mess up my attendance streak. Besides, I have to bring Lisa to school today so I have to leave super early. Hurrying up I clean myself and I am out in 5 minutes. Standing in front of the closet, I frown. Beth has almost emptied my entire closet. Just two t-shirts, a red tank top hung inside and a pairs of shorts. Did my clothes smell that bad? I shrug putting on the red tank top and shorts.

Living here is easy. Before Beth married Jake, it was kind of hard for her to look after me. Even with two jobs, we struggled financially. But Beth did it all for me. I know what she had to go through to raise me. With our parents not around, she was my only adult role model. I looked up to her. I wanted to be like her. Strong, loving and everything that she is. I have never seen my parents. They left us with our grandmother when Beth was eleven and I was two. I didn't know what happened to them except for the fact that they were heartless enough to leave their children. Grandma left her house to Beth when she died four years later. That was the hardest time in our lives. Juggling jobs and struggling to keep up with the increasing bills, Beth did her best to provide me all the love, care and affection. She is my everything.

I get out of my room, all ready and enter kitchen, lost in my thoughts. My eyes fall on Beth and my brother in law, their backs to me, laughing about something quietly. Jake whispers something and kisses Beth on her head holding her waist. I smile to myself. They were the perfect couple. Jake was the most amazing thing that had ever happened to Beth and me. He saved Beth. Literally.

They met at a cafe Beth worked at. He was with his friends one night at the cafe when he saw this beautiful angel spilling coffee on a man sitting beside his table. She started apologizing but the man who was half drunk, groped her ass. Seeing this Jake got pissed, punched the man and saved Beth. Well, that's his version of their love story. So yeah, I would only believe it when I ride a time machine back into the time and see it. Fast forward to three years of dating they got married. A year later a new member was added to the family, Lisa, my cutest sweetest five year old niece. Jake was the sweetest guy and he loved me as his little sister. I was happy for Beth. She deserved him. I hope someday I'd get someone like Jake who would love me like he loves Beth.
