Chapter 22: Hurricane
"I didn't think Aaron would do something like that. I didn't even think he knew what 'lying' is," Danni said distractedly, making way through the crowd to the front row seats.
Today was game day. The whole school, parents, friends had come to cheer Goldriver High players. Most of us were dressed in brown and white, the colours of our school to show support for our team. Our rivals were Redcrest High, who according to Josh played like kindergarten kids. I had almost rolled my eyes when he had said that. Typical Josh-thing to say.
I sat down in my seat beside Danni careful not to spill the coke on my ivory sweater and surveyed the ground. All the players were warming up and the cheerleaders with their pom poms ready to start their routines.
"There he is." I spotted Aaron talking to coach. Aaron was the team captain and I knew he was stressed about this game, about making his dad proud. I still hadn't talked to him about the whole ''lie-thing'. Being the good girlfriend that I am, I decided to confront him about it after the game so his focus would solely be on winning tonight.
"Stupid kid and his stupid drink!" Cody flopped down beside Danni angrily muttering profanities, wiping his shirt with tissues. Two big pink colour stains were visible on his white polo shirt.
"What happened?" Danni asked trying not to laugh at him.
"Some kid wiped his sticky hands on my shirt. I smell like freaking strawberries."
"I don't think it's a bad thing," Danni muttered to herself but I heard it and nudged her sending her a sly smile.
"Is that so?" Cody smirked, leaning toward her. Apparently he heard it too. Danni blushed as Cody continued to tease her.
Shaking my head at the pair I focused on the ground where the players had taken their positions. I took my time appreciating how good all the guys looked in those brown jerseys and white shorts, specially Aaron and -as much as hate to admit it- Josh. Boy, did they look fine in it. Just then Aaron's eyes fell on me, I stiffened in my seat when he smiled my way and mouthed 'you came'.
I gave him a tight lipped smile, immediately averted my eyes which met a pair of brown ones, already staring at me. I waved at Josh excitedly and yelled, "WIN IT JOSHY!"
I'd assumed he'd flip me off or something for calling him Joshy in front of so many people but he didn't. My laughter died down as he stared at me a little longer, shook his head and looked down, faint smile playing on his lips.
Blinking, confused at what just happened I slumped down in my seat and sipped on my coke. Josh can be so unpredictable. At the same time the whistle went off, the game began and the crowd went crazy. This was what I love about football games. The school spirit is multiplied, everybody on this day proudly yells their school's name and there is only one thought in everybody's mind- to win.
"So what's Aaron's and Josh's position?" Danni yelled to be heard over the crowd's screams.
"Aaron is the center midfielder and Josh is the striker," Cody answered.
Ninety minutes into the game, things weren't looking that good. The score board read 1-1. In the last four minutes Redcrest High players seemed to have upped their game. Currently they possessed the ball, passing it around the pitch, getting dangerously close to the goal. We held our breaths as one of their players kicked the ball, aiming it towards the net. Trevor saved it, and passed it quickly to Aaron who dribbled the ball along with him, dodging other players.
"Aaron! Pass!" Josh yelled, running a few feet ahead of him. From where I could see, Josh had a better angle to score a goal than Aaron. "Aaron you dumbshit! Pass it to me!"
