CHAPTER FOUR: Busted!
"Would you set up the table Ann? Beth would be home any minute now."
I nodded and placed three plates on the table. Lisa was at her friend's and Beth was running late. So it was just me and Jake.
"So..." Jake started as he poured water in the glasses.
"So... what?" I asked knowing he wanted to ask me something I dreaded talking about.
"You promised me that you would tell me something eventually."
"I promised you no such thing Jake."
"Enough," he sat down, motioning for me to sit down and said in a very businesslike tone. "Tell me what's wrong between Eric and you."
I sighed. There was no way out of this. I blurted out the first thing that came up in my mind, "he told me he had a girlfriend."
Jake's eyes widened. Shaking his head he said, "no no. From the start." So I spent the next fifteen minutes explaining everything to him.
"That rat. He's going to have it the next time I see him."
"No Jake you—" the door bell rang so I got up quickly thankful that we didn't have to talk about it anymore. As soon as I opened the door, Beth crashed onto me.
"Food! I need food!"
"Wow. Hello to you too Beth," I said letting her in.
She smiled sheepishly. "Sorry Ann. I am extremely hungry. I did not have lunch today and now I'm starving."
"Okay okay. Are you going to change or-"
"No I'll eat first and then change— hi!" Beth greeted her husband as we got into the kitchen.
"Hi baby. Let's get you some food first before you eat the table."
I sat myself on my usual place just as the bell rung again.
"I'll get it," Jake said.
Beth had already attacked her meal. Chuckling I put some lasagne on my plate. Jake was an awesome cook, even better than Beth and lasagne was his specialty.
"Why is he taking so long?" Beth asked, sauce dropping from the left side of her face. I grimaced. "Wait I'll see."
As I neared the door I heard someone say, "...But I'm pretty sure she lives here. I was given this address."
"I already told you kid. No one of that name lives here," Jake said closing the door. I got a glimpse of the person standing out but before I could react, the person yelled startling me.
"Audrey!"
Jake turned. "Annabel?"
I froze on the spot looking at a confused looking Josh, "Josh?"
"Annabel?"
Woah busted!
I would have laughed at this situation if this was about another person, but it was me. Josh found out my name. Finally. I shuffled on my feet nervously as the men stared at me waiting for me to explain. "Um... Hi?"
Beth came out yelling, "what is taking you both so long— oh hi! Are you a friend of Annabel's?"
"Yeah I am her friend. Won't you introduce me Annabel?"
I avoided looking at him because I didn't want to know what look he was wearing. I smiled weakly at Beth and Jake. "This is Elizabeth, my sister and her husband Jake. And this is Josh, my ... friend."
