Recap

“If I wanted to end your life I’d do it myself, stupid.” I couldn’t really say that made me feel any better but it was as if a pebble rolled off the rocks on my shoulder.  The thing that did irritate me besides the threats and desperate attempts to trap Rex into her feminizing ways was her tone. My already short patience was wearing thin. And she thinks she’s going to start giving me death threats and I’m just going to nod my head like a chicken? Heck no! I was not one to wait around and take bunch of insults. Did I mention my temper was equally as short? Not as short as Rex's though. No wonder we get on each other’s nerves so easily.

“Could you just tell me what the heck you want woman!” I snapped angrily. Then I widened my eyes at my usual rudeness. I could picture her raising a perfectly shaped eyebrow.

“Please?” I hastily added soon after. No need to get on her bad side I reminded myself.

Then she dropped the bomb.

“Don’t leave this life. Don’t leave the town… leave Ryan’s life.”

My jaw hit the floor. No words were forming I couldn’t even think straight. I couldn’t fathom what she was asking from me so I just listened like a wooden puppet.

“Walk out of his life and never step foot in it ever again.”

Chapter 17

‘Walk out of his life…and never step foot in it ever again.’ The words rang through my head, swimming around. My mind slowly processed the gravity of that one sentence.

“Did you hear that, b**tch?” the Wicked Witch of the West coast snapped me back to my senses.

“Who you calling a-,” I stopped before I dug myself a deeper grave. ‘Think before you speak’. I recalled a poster I saw in the school hallways. I ran a hand over my face. Why is this proposition so hard to accept?

“And what if I don’t?” I cautiously asked, masking all emotions in my voice. I certainly don’t need to give her the upper hand. Well… she technically already had it but, you know, I didn’t wanna make it higher.

“As if.” She scoffed. “If you decline my order,” I raised an eyebrow. “Yes order, not suggestion.” She answered my thoughts. “Ryan’s makeshift life over there on the east coast will be o-ver” she stressed the ‘o’. She laughed. “I can see it now. The headlines in big bold letters, ‘Man with magical eyes’. He’ll be exposed to become the strangest science experiment ever known to man. With those eyes, it’s bound to attract attention. Who knows if-“

“Okay stop!” I cut her off unable to hear any more of this. “I’ll…I’ll do it. Just give me 24 hours. Then I’ll never cross his path again.” I whispered the last part. As if saying it softer would make it less real. To my utter surprise, I felt my throat tighten. Something that only happened when my dad disappeared, or when I was worried about someone I cared about. Someone I cared about..? I did care about Rex…maybe a little mo-I shook the thoughts out of my head.  No need to have a life changing epiphany and deepen the wound. So what? I can’t mingle with Rex anymore? No big deal. I’m doing him and Jerry a favor. I care about all of my friends.  So of course I care about them, just like I cared for Lyla and Mick. We were just friends. ..Well friends didn’t exactly go around kissing their friends cheeks. I blushed at the memory and smiled when I remembered his flustered state. I really thought we were going somewhere. I thought I could be that great, trust worthy friend that he needed. And hopefully, maybe he’d slowly start liking me back- I snapped out of it. No there’s no need to even think about the possibilities right now. It certainly can’t happen anymore ever since this tramp walked back in his life.  I rolled my eyes. Only someone with my luck would have to be threatened to stay away from their first and only senior year crush. What are the odds?
