When I woke up I was in a hospital. My vision was blurry and half my vision was gone. I reached up. There was a bandage on my head and a patch over my eye. My right leg and left arm were both in casts. I looked around painfully. No one was in my room. All of the walls were white and plain. To my right was a small table with a bunch of medicines on it and a granola bar wrapper.

The door to the bathroom is open and the light is on. There is a small window at the end of my bed. What happened? My whole body is on-oh my god. Fire. That's what happened. I went dragon. In my house. I try to slow my heart rate down. Ok Ash. Breathe. Concentrate.

I feel a warm glow course throughout my body and everything feels a little better. After a few seconds I open my eyes and sure enough the casts have burned away and my bones have been put back into place. I take a deep breath and step off my bed. I'm still in my hospital gown so the doctors and nurses will know I'm running. Ok just make it down to ground level and call mom. You got this. I take a deep breath. Than another one. And then one more.

Finally I crack open my door and bolt down the hallway. Immediately I hear, "Hey! You! Come back!"

I don't look back. I don't stop. I don't slow down. I have to find my mom. I throw open the doors to the stairs. Two flights down I hear the door reopen and footsteps thunder and echo filling the hallway to the brim with voices and steps. I gun it down four more flights before I throw open the door that takes me to a hallway on the ground floor.

I look to my right and see the lobby and I sprint toward it as fast as I can. I run out the hospital doors gasping for breath. My lungs feel like they're collapsing in my chest. My hair has fallen over my eyes. I don't stop though. I keep running.

I run into the parking deck and duck into a bathroom. I lock myself into one the stalls. The bathroom is quiet and my breathing sounds like a cannon in the stillness.

Ten minutes later I am breathing normally. I walk to the door and press my ear against it. Nothing. I take a breath and shove the door open. No one.

I take a minute and sort my thoughts into two categories: What I Know and What I Need to Know.

What I know is:
A: I went dragon
B: I can't find my family
C: I am running from a hospital
D: I'm scared
E: I need help right now

What I need to know is:
A: Where my family is
B: Where my dad is
C: Is my house still standing
D: Does everyone know I'm a dragon
E: Is the government searching for me
F: Why this all had to happen now

Ok. First thing's first. Find family. I walk out of the parking deck and hide behind bushes until I make it into a place I know I'm safe. Casey's Bakery.

Casey is Maddie's aunt. She loves me and I know once I tell her what's going on, she'll help me. I go through the back entrance and open the kitchen door. I spot Casey on the other side studying a recipe book. Her pale blonde hair is tied up in a hair net and when she sees me she rushes over.

"Ashley Myron! What happened to ya kid? Is that a hospital gown? Are you ok? Wait, why are you wearing a hospital gown?"

"I ran away from a hospital and I need to find my family. There was a fire at our house and I haven't seen them sense."

Casey's face pales.
"What?" I ask, "What's wrong?"

"Honey we need to talk. In my office. Now."

Her hand guides me into a warm, small office. Papers are in neat stacks and there is a small bookshelf behind the desk.

"Where's my family?" I ask desperate to know.

She looks unsure about how to answer. "You're brother and sister are fine. They ran out of the house in time. You're mother's body wasn't found. So she's alive but they don't know where she is. Don't worry, I'm sure she's fine."

"Where are Ty and Griff?" I'll worry about my mom later. Right now I need to find my siblings.

"They're with your father." Casey looks me dead in the eye.

"Where is that?" I question, meeting her clear blue eyes.

"Ash. I know. I know about your family and I know about you. Going to your father's could endanger Ty and Griff. Even your mother. If you go, lay low. Don't talk about the fire with anyone but Ty and Griff. You are your father's girl, therefore there will be conflict. About you. About your side. Just choose correctly."

She writes down the address.
"How did you find out?" I wonder as she hands me the paper.

"Your mother told me that if anything happened to her, I should take you in. She had to include the small detail that you all were...unique," she smiles, "Good luck, and remember that you are always welcome here."

I nod and turn to leave.

"Wait one sec." Casey grabs my shoulder and runs to the back. She returns with some clothes, "These are Maddie's. Don't bother returning them. You can change back here. Don't want you running around in that ugly gown all day."

Then she walked out, clicking the door shut after her.
