After two days of nonstop fighting, mostly between my mom and sister, the big day had finally arrived when the two boys were planned to arrive. As my mother had proclaimed, Naomi was moved to my bedroom so we could make room for the boys. Most of her stuff had been able to fit in my room, and then anything we couldn't fit was put up in the attic. That was a whole process with a lot of screaming, some hitting and Toby falling downstairs.
I think overall though, it went better than expected and when the awaited morning arrived everyone got up nice and early. Normally, we didn't have a problem getting up at the crack of dawn but on a Saturday morning, we the children, all had a very big problem with it.
During the whole process of getting ready for the boys to arrive I had been patient, didn't complain about anything and even felt a little excited, but when I was woken up from my first peaceful night of sleep in forever, I was ticked off. Instead of telling my mom that though, I just locked myself in the bathroom and aggressively brushed my teeth. Once I had done that and cleaned up a little, I felt a little better and proceeded to run around helping with last minute preparations.
While I did, I couldn't help but wonder why I didn't have the nightmare. For two years I had been tormented every night with the terrifying, realistic dream but last night I didn't dream at all. It gave me hope that maybe my reoccurring nightmares were finally beginning to stop, and I'd be plagued no more. Or the excitement of getting ready for the boys, was so tiring I had been to tired to dream. I suppose the next couple of nights would be a test of that. Either way, it was progress that I reported to Mac in a quick text as Gemma and I helped my mom make egg salad for later.
When we talked about it over lunch the following day, Mac agreed with me that the whole situation was a little odd and that it was wrong of my parents not to include us in the decision about taking the boys in. However though, we both also agreed it was the right thing to do. Other then them being related to one of my mom's friends though, the only thing I knew about them were their ages and that they were coming today. This led to a bit of a guessing game between Gemma and me.
Soon enough though, we all had an opportunity to retire back to our rooms and take a break from the chaos so I decided to lay back on my bed and sort my recently processed photos in so I could place them in my portfolio; which was technically just a big scrapbook. As I worked, Naomi leaned out my window with binoculars she had stolen from Toby. "I don't see the targets yet." She informed, making me roll my eyes.
"Naomi they're not targets, their guests. You better be nice to them, they just got separated from their mom." I scolded softly.
"Yeah, yeah I know, and I got separated from my room." Naomi grumbled. Rolling my eyes, I put my photos back in their envelope and closed my photo album before walking over to her.
"Come on Mimi, get away from the window. You need to grow up, your acting like a selfish crybaby," I said as I tried to grab the binoculars from her. Grunting she smacked my arm.
"Leave me alone. I do as I please," She said, and I smacked her arm back before trying to grab the binoculars again. In return she hit me over the shoulder with them.
"Give them to me Naomi! You're going to make them think we're crazy!" I finally snapped. So much for staying in a good, positive mood today as I had intended.
"Good! Maybe that will make them leave sooner!" Naomi snapped back as we began to play tug-of-war with the binoculars.
"They can't and won't leave because they have nowhere to go!" I yelled as I pinched her arm, so she'd let go but my sister had the highest pain tolerance ever, one I envied.
"If they want to leave, they will!"
"No, they won't! Their kids!"
"So? I'm younger them both and I'm going to leave!''
"You can't because that'd make you a runaway and you'd go to jail!"
"ABIGAIL!"
"NAOMI!"
Then, just our screaming reached its height, we heard the sound of a truck pulling up and suddenly our petty fight was forgotten as we both rushed back to the window.
"Is that them?" She asked eagerly as we both shared the binoculars.
"I think so; the car is parking in the driveway." I informed, the two of us practically halfway out the window as we watched the car pull in then stopped. A moment later a woman dressed in business attire and two guys stepped out.
"Do you think those are the dudes?" Naomi asked, taking a moment to look at me before looking back at them. When our mom had said they were fifteen and sixteen I had been expecting two scrawny boys who were no taller than Gemma. These guys though, these guys were the same size as full-grown men, if not bigger. Maybe it was the way I was looking at them though? The roof below us was blocking most of our view.
"There's no way that was them. Maybe those two guys are body guards or something?" I suggested as we both pulled away from the window upon hearing the doorbell ring.
"Whether they are or not, I'm going downstairs to assess my competition." My maddening little sister decided and with that I found myself following her downstairs as I quietly begged her not to make a scene.
Downstairs Toby and Gemma were standing in the doorway of the living room and I could hear my parents laughing as they made light conversation with the lady. Without excusing herself, Naomi wiggled her way between Gemma and Toby and into the living room before nestling herself under my dad's arm.
With less urgency, I followed behind her, and when I stepped in-between my older siblings, I glanced around the living room to see what was going on. The adults were gathered in the center of the living room, the three of them talking pleasantly while Naomi eavesdropped with a grouchy expression.
After listening to their conversation for a moment, I then turned over to look at the two guys sitting on the couch. Still though I couldn't get a good glimpse of them because the adults were blocking me from a proper view.
"Alright, well now that the formalities are in place it's probably time to let the kids meet each other." My dad chuckled and the woman nodded in approval.
"Yes, I agree. It's always a little threatening to the children of the home when there's new arrivals," She said as she then gestured for the two boys to stand up. "Children, this is Pluto and Jupiter," She said and finally I got a full glimpse of the boys as the two of them stood up and glanced over at Toby, Gemma and I.
A frown then crossed my face when I realized they looked really familiar. One of them had dark hair and light brown eyes, he looked sweet and innocent. Then the other, who looked nothing like him might I add, had messy blonde hair, sleep deprived eyes and looked kind of damaged-
Instantly then I covered my mouth to muffle my gasp as I stepped away from the living room, the breath entirely knocked out of me as my heart began to pound so fast I felt like I could see its imprint.
"Abigail! Abby...Abby what's wrong?" Toby asked upon grabbing my arm but all I could focus on was the two boys. All I could focus on was them staring back at me as I stared back at them in horror, feeling my head spin ten different directions.
"Abigail are you okay?" I heard Gemma's far off voice chime in a moment after Toby's.
"You look like you're going to faint! Are you okay? What's wrong Abigail?" My mom asked but all I could see were the boys. All I could see were their eyes, bearing down on me, almost like—they were suggesting I stay quiet.
Even if I wanted to say something, I couldn't, my words were lodged in my swelling throat as my vision blurred. I knew them, I knew them very well, because they came to visit me every night when I went to sleep.
They were the two boys from my dream.
The two boys I knew weren't human.
