Stevie tried to hide her anger as she and Kristen made their way to the car. Switching into her professional modus, Stevie put on a stoic expression, not wanting to let anyone know what she was really feeling inside. Kristen, being right next to her, knew this mask well. Stevie might appear to be calm on the outside, but inside a storm was raging.
And as soon as the two women were seated in the car and drove away, luckily not being followed by the paparazzi, Stevie’s calm demeanor changed immediately.
“Who do they think they are?” Stevie was near shrieking. “Don’t they have anyone else they need to follow today? Gods, what happened to all the Lindsays, Brinteys, and I don’t know who else? Is Brangelina not in town? What the heck happened that they all of sudden remember me?”
“Stevie, keep it cool.” Kristen tried to interrupt the rant, but doubted that Stevie had even heard her.
“Did they woke up today thinking, Oh, let’s just begin to stalk Stevie Nicks. She hadn’t had enough media attention during the last fifteen years, so let’s give her some?”
“You’re okay now? Screamed enough?”
“Actually I’ve just begun.” Stevie replied dryly. “But,” she took a deep breath, willing herself to calm down again. “I shouldn’t complain. First I complain about not getting any attention from the media and now that I get it, I’m complaining again.”
“What does this tell you?” Kristen looked sideway for a short moment before concentrating on the traffic again.
“That I’m a picture perfect Gemini.” Stevie muttered. “Why can’t I make up my mind just once, deciding what I want and what I don’t want?”
“Well, it wouldn’t be you if you all of sudden knew exactly what you want.” Kristen laughed. “Okay, that’s not quite right. You know what you want when it comes to your family and your career.”
“I only know what I want when it comes to Lindsey since it was nearly too late for us to be together.” Stevie answered. “I only made up my mind cause... I don’t even know why I made up my mind. It just happened.”
“Oh gosh.” Kristen said under her breath.
“It did. He talked me into rehab, stayed with me, left me to work on Street Angel, came back to tour with me and just moved in with me after the tour was over.” Stevie shook her head, wondering how exactly they had made it this far without ever really deciding to be back together. “I mean I told him before the tour, but Lindsey didn’t think it would be good to be together at that time...”
“Did you ever make a conscious decision to be together again?”
“No.” Stevie answered after thinking for a moment, trying to remember what had happened after she had kicked off Klonopin and was home again. “Well, we talked about our break up, that we still loved each other. And we decided it couldn’t get worse than the first time if we’d be together again. But really deciding to be together again, we didn’t.”
“Now that’s some news.”Kristen rolled her eyes.
“It was a subconscious decision, but a good one.” Stevie defended their decision. “And it couldn’t be wrong. After all, I agreed to marry him this time.”
“You know, you two could have avoided a lot of pain if you just had gotten married in the seventies.” Kristen said. “You might’ve had the kids now as well, but at least you wouldn’t have nearly twenty years of regret and pain to live with now.”
“I don’t think that would’ve worked out.” Stevie shook her head. “Lindsey wanted me to be his entirely, not wanting to share me with anyone else. He was jealous every time I stepped on stage and the crowd roared. And I didn’t want to give that up back then. I enjoyed it too much. I enjoyed the attention I got.”
