RASHEL:
‘Stop it, Zach!’ I swatted my best friend’s arm as I pretended to be angry but I couldn’t help the laugh that escaped my lips. Zach was imitating our English Literature teacher, who at the moment was teaching us and was completely oblivious to the guy who was making fun of her. Well, making fun of her was an understatement. He was…well…I don’t know the word, but it wasn’t great.
‘Oh come on, Rash. I know you want me to make you laugh. You are bored out of your mind.’ Zach said rather loudly, and I looked around to see if anyone a heard him. Several girls were looking in our direction and I am pretty damn sure that it wasn’t because of what they heard. It was because of what they were seeing. Zach.
Meet Zachary David Anderson, ladies and gentleman, my best friend in this whole freaking world, in fact, my only true friend in this whole freaking world and the one person I can’t even imagine my life without. Trust me, I have tried and I came up blank. I love this guy with such intensity that it’s not even funny. No, it’s not like that. It’s not some cliché love story where the girl is in love with her best friend who is the jock of the college and is dating the most popular girl of the school. Well, yeah, Zach is the jock of the uni, but I am not in love with him nor is he dating the most beautiful girl in the school. I mean he isn’t dating anyone.
‘Yes, Zach, I am but if you keep making me laugh, we are going to get kicked out.’ I smiled widely at him and he just gave me a funny look. I laughed at how relaxed he seems and how much he seemed like he actually was. It has been a long time since I saw Zach like that, so carefree and careless, without any worry in the world; trust me, I missed him like hell.
‘As if you care about that.’ he grinned at me and I swear that almost all the girls in the class who were looking at him just mentally swooned at the sight of him.
‘I do.’ I replied.
‘Since when did you become a goody two shoes?’ he asked, even though he knew the answer. I wasn’t a good girl; I was its actual opposite.
‘I didn’t.’ I replied and grinned at him before I continued, ‘I promised your dad that I would make sure you don’t get expelled and looking at how you already have two detentions lined up, not to mention you somehow dragged me into it, I think we’re better off not taking risks.’ I explained it to him. No, I wasn’t regretting that Zach had detention. In fact, I was glad that he had detention. It just proved that he was coming back to his self, the one who causes trouble all day long in the university.
‘Fine, Rash. I will keep quiet.’ He pretended to lock his lips and throw the invisible keys over his shoulders. I smiled at him and he smiled back. It was a genuine one that I had really missed. I was glad that he seemed to be back to his usual annoying yet adorable self.
But my moment of happiness was soon interrupted when Mrs. Stone, also known as the wicked English teacher, called our names.
‘Miss Davis, Mr. Anderson, please get out of the class.’ She said straight away without even bothering with a warning.
‘But—‘ Zach started but Mrs. Stone gave him a look that told him shut up. Mrs. Stone was the strictest teacher Wentworth University had. She hated our guts and would stop at nothing to have her way with students. To be brutally honest, I think she deserved to be thrown out of the school.
Besides me, I could feel Zach tensing up and I knew he was angry and even though I didn’t preach non violence and respect to elders, (because honestly, when you have parents like mine, you lose the concept of respect for elders), I didn’t want Zach to be in trouble. I grabbed his hands and squeezed it with mine until I felt him wrapping his fingers around mine. I gave him a small smile and the two of us grabbed our stuff and left the class but not before Zach gave a dirty look to Mrs. Stone.
