I think it's amazing what people do to show someone they love them. Sit through concerts of their favorite artist, spend countless hours shopping with them, stay up late comforting them when their upset, go to dinner with that persons brother, who hates them. So many things.Pete and I walked hand in hand to the front of my house. He stopped right when he got to the door and looked over at me. He was fidgeting with my hand and looked like he just saw a ghost.
"You okay? You seem a bit nervous," I ask him, holding his hand tighter. He was going to this stupid celebratory dinner for me, the least I could do was make sure he was okay.
"Yeah, just a bit cold," he said with a laugh. That was a total lie but I went with it anyways. Pete was acting like this all day and he won't tell me what's wrong.
"Okay, if you say so," I say still unsure that he's totally fine. I open up the door and see a bunch of our friends and family all here.
"Wow, your brother really went all out on this," Pete tells me as we make our way inside the house. It's true too, theres balloons, presents, cake, and banners everywhere.
"Mikey, I'm so glad you're alright," he tells me as he pulls me into a giant hug. I awkwardly hug him back, not really too sure how I'm supposed to reply to that.
"Thanks," I mumble as he lets me go from the tight embrace. I look over at Pete for help but he just laughs at me.
Patrick turns around and starts taking to Pete, so I take this chance to scope out a bit more of this party.
I walk over to where Gerard and Frank are talking about comic books. It's more like Gerard is talking and Frank is standing there nodding every once in a while.
"Hey Mikes, how do you like this?" He asked with an excited voice.
"It's great, I love it. Thanks," I tell him and he just smiles. I see Frank silently begging me to keep Gerard from going back to the conversation so I help the best I can. "Gerard's right, the original series is so much better," I say to Frank as I'm ready to leave.
"See Frank? Why would a remake of something almost compete to the original..." Gerard starts ranting to Frank again. I laugh as I walk away from the argument.
I head back to the living room where I see Pete standing alone. I head over to him, dodging bodies in the process. When he finally sees me, he starts heading over to me.
"Why is Frank flipping you off?" Pete asked with a giggle. I turn around and sure enough I see Frank glaring at me from the corner I left him.
"I may have gotten Gerard started on a topic about comic books," I reply laughing when Gerard starts talking to Frank again.
"Wow, you're meaner than I thought," Pete said raising his eyebrows a bit. "Hey, dance with me," he tells me, wrapping his arms around my neck.
"There's no music?" I say confused at this random act.
"So, I'll just have to sing," he whispers, putting his face in the crook of my neck. I roll my eyes, but put my arms around his waist anyways.
"Wise men say, only fools rush in..." He starts singing a familiar melody. I close my eyes and sway back and forth to the beat. Soon enough, I join in on the singing,
"But I can't help falling in love with you," we finish and I open my eyes to see Pete staring at me with a goofy grin on his face.
"What?" I ask him. I can already feel myself starting to blush.
"You're beautiful," he tells me, pecking my lips.
"GUYS DINNER IS READY!" I hear Gerard shout from across the room. I take Petes hand and we head for the table.
I take a seat with Pete on one side of me and Gerard on another. I look over and Pete looks like he's about to pass out. I grab his hand and run circles on it, which seems to calm him down a bit.
"What's wrong?" I ask him but he just shakes his head insisting he's fine. I still hold onto his hand though, not believing one word he says.
Halfway through the meal, things are going great. People are laughing and having wild conversations.
"So she just took your phone and ran?" Ray asked with a laugh. We were going over the time people lost their phones and Petes wild story made a reappearance.
"Yeah, I was so upset, had so many important things in that phone," he says with a weak laugh.
Dinner carries on like that, casual conversation between us all. As everybody begins finishing up, I feel Pete let go of my hand. I look over at him and see him beginning to stand up.
"Can I say something real quick?" He asked in a shaky voice, getting the attention of everybody around us. What the hell was he doing?
"Thank you. So for those of you who don't know, I'm Mikey's boyfriend," he said shakily. I just look at him confused, not understanding what was going on.
"When Mikey was first diagnosed, I didn't have the best reaction and I still feel sick thinking about it. I always had this image of what our lives would be like, and never in my wildest dreams did I imagine this coming into our lives. Mikey was so brave through the whole thing, more brave than I know I could've been. And that's what I love about him, he can get through anything. But even the bravest people have their days and that's when I knew he needed me as much as I needed him. I remember one day when he was doubting himself, I made him a promise. One that I swore to live up to as soon as he got better," I felt my blood run cold, he couldn't be talking about what I think he was.
"So what I think I'm trying to say is... Michael James Way, will you marry me?"
