Winning Heart

I was awash in a glorious glow from the launching of our friendship

I used to bathe in the heat of our passionate embrace.

Thrilled by the timeless nature of what we two were able to share

Just so happy to be involved; like a couple of hummingbirds that have evolved

We shared one voice, our goal was to sing to each other

We had nothing else to do but to tell each other I love you

We had it made, each day we longed to hold each other

And at night, our hearts beat as one... until the morning would come.

But then other matters arrived, in an instant our love was put aside

How could this happen? How could a love that soared now flatten?

Under a spell were our movements, we used to move in sync

That was how we used to be, so much in love.

One of us wanted to win; while the other did not defend

Praised by our peers for the time together that we did spend

A savoury dish - we used to be that too

But a winning heart got in the way, who knew?

That a winning heart was all that it would take to brew...

Disgruntled demands and disgusted denigrations

Blow-outs and non-incendiary conflagrations

A previous lifetime of good intentions

All thrown away by the need to mention

I told you so.

That is how a winning heart works.

Just take your partner and press her close

Hold on tight so she can feel what matters most

Kill two birds with one effortful throw

Throw out your winning ways and let it go...

Then you will know

What love feels like.
