One Year Later

Tamika's 20th birthday was coming up soon in a week in fact. Her and Holly have lived with their grandparents ever since their parents deaths. Holly has moved on, but sometimes forgets her parents are gone. Then she'd cry in either Grandma's or Tamika's arms for a few hour, before she falls asleep. Tamika got a new job near her grandparents house at a cafe as a waitress.

Holly had started school a week ago and already has a friend. Elliot is 7 years old and has an older brother named Ricky who is 21. Tamika took Holly on a play date at the park with Elliot. Where she met Ricky who is gay and became her new best friend. Her others had left when her parents died and she moved.

My grandparents live in a three bedroom house in the hills. It was surrounded by forest which they hiked/camped in every fortnight on a weekend. Tamika's grandparents were worried for their oldest granddaughter. Due to an old legend of a deal made with 'death' on her Grandpa's side of the family. They haven't said anything hoping it was just a legend.

Tamika's POV

I was woken up by Holly jumping on the bed yelling "wake up, Grand-mama made pancakes!" I laughed pulling her down to lay beside me. She tried to get out of me hold laughing.

"It is to early Holly let's go back to sleep" I suggested closing my eyes.

"But sissy there is maple syrup" Holly told me.

"Why didn't you say so? Last one there is a rotten egg" I said jumping out of bed. Before running out of the room with her behind me. I slowed down to let her past me and reach the kitchen first.

"Yeah I won" Holly cheered as our Grandpa chuckled and Grandma smiled. We took our seats and said our prayers as usual. An other tradition to pray before meals at our grandparents house. Mum and Dad only used to make us do it at dinner and on special days.

"So want's the plan today?" Grandpa asked the table at large reading the newspaper.

"I am taking Holly shopping in town today" Grandma said as she poured Grandpa a coffee.

"I was thinking of going hiking in the forest" I told my grandparents. "What about you Grandpa?" I asked pouring some milk for Holly.

"I have to go into the office, but I'll be back around 3" he answered. Grandpa works at a computer company he owns. My Dad used to run it, but after his death Grandpa took over again. But he is retiring soon to pass the position to his younger brother. My great Uncle Bob who was moving back to Adelaide. He was ten years younger then Grandpa and had been traveling around Egypt for the past year.

After breakfast I did the dishes while Grandpa left for work. Holly went to put on her hat and shoes before following Grandma to her car. Once the dishes were finished I went to change into blue jeans and pink hoodie over a white shirt. I locked the door behind me, before entering the forest following the path.
