Chapter 9: (Christine's POV)
1 HOUR EARLIERIt had been one week, since my arrogant father, banished me to the highest tower in the castle. It was a large, circular room with only a bench, cupboard and a small resting cot. The room reeked of stale urine and rum...
For days, I would gaze out the window and wonder how someone could be so conceded and heartless.
My hand maid, Amelia, came to me once a day for food and water. This was the only time of day, where I actually smiled.Amelia was not just my hand maid. She was my best friend. For years we had shared the dinner she had brought up for me and we laughed until tears streamed down our faces. Although our friendship was golden, it pained me because I was of the royal blood and she was not. Like my love for Erik. It was forbidden...
I heard the steel key plunge into the tall, brass, door. "Amelia!" I said as I ran to her.
Today Amelia wore a tattered blue gown with her hair pulled to a side knot. Her blonde hair framed her pale complexion perfectly.
"Why are you not in your regular attire?" I questioned her as she walked towards me with open arms.
"You must be quiet Christine!" Amelia replied, with a giggle.
"I am on my way to the Royal Ball for the King's birthday bonanza... The one day I am not forced to scrub the tar off of the palace windows! But truly, I should not be up here but I came for you anyway... To give you this." She added.
Amelia handed me a rectangle package, covered with brown cloth and tied with twine.
I unwrapped the gift. with a large smile upon my face.
"A journal. Oh Amelia, you know me so well..." I told my friend as a single tear streamed down my face.
"Christine, I am so sorry for this circumstance. What King Gustave did to you is not admirable in the slightest... I'm here for you, dear friend. The one good thing that man has done since the death of your mother is appoint me your hand maid." Amelia said with a warm smile.
"My darling, that means the world to me. It feels elating to know that someone, as dear as you, is on my side." I told her, planting a kiss on her cheek.
"I understand it must be lonely up in this musty old tower, so I brought you this... Write down your feelings in this diary and think of me." Amelia stated.I ran my fingers over the embroidery that lined the bottom.
"Amelia. I love you." I told my best friend as I have her a hug.
"Now, go to that Ball! Don't be late!" I said grinning and wiping away the tears.
"Yes, 'madame'." Amelia replied, making fun of my other servants.
As Amelia locked the door behind her, fury invaded my being.
I went to the small bench in front of the window and sat. I flipped to the first page in the diary and dated it.
September 12, 1534
Dear Diary,
This is utterly outrageous. If Gustave were to find out that I am freinds with my hand maid, who I have loved for many years, he would execute her on the spot. She is considered unworthy, in his eyes... This kingdom is flawed in various ways and it's up to be to correct it... I don't understand.
For some odd reason I changed the whole topic to Erik, as he invaded my mind.
I love Erik and Father is just in the way. I must find a way to be with him. I realize that I sound foolish knowing love after one kiss but, it felt to correct! I had never felt this feeling for anyone at all, not even my betrothed... I love him, but only on my own.
I closed the diary shut and started to sing. Singing is what I knew to do, in times of grief and pain.
Think of me,
Think of me fondly,
When we've said goodbye. As I sang I prayed that Erik was safe, in the dungeon. I knew that he was most likely being mistreated but I still prayed for a glimmer of hope.
I turned my head away from the diary and saw something reflect on the wooden floor.
I walked over to the object and discovered that it was the key to open the bedroom door.
"Amelia." I said smiling, understanding hat she left the key for me on purpose.
Quickly, I ran to the cupboard to find the only cloak I had up here in this prison.
I slid the baby blue cloak overtop my head and buttoned it at the seam.
I fastened the hood around my hand and walked towards the door. I held the cold, steel key in my hand and turned it right way up. I slide it into the slot in the door and opened it quietly.
I shut the door behind me and began my journey down all the flights of stairs, trying not to be heard.
