Asriel stood there, silently looking up at the sky through the chasm Frisk had fallen down. Surrounded by golden light and golden flowers, they could hardly believe he was actually here and not just an angel of their own imagination. There were tears reflected on his face and he had the expression of someone who was resolved to what would happen next.
Leaves and flowers crunching under their feet, Frisk came closer and put a hand on the boy's shoulder. He didn't turn, but smiled and spoke.
"Don't worry about me, Frisk. After all, someone's gotta care for these flowers."
Frisk asked him quietly, not wanting to hurt him more than he already was:
"You mean the grave? Someone to care for their grave?"
Asriel lost his smile. "Y-yes," He took a deep breath. "You know, I don't know how I could have mistaken the two of you. You are very different people."
He sighed and finally turned to look at Frisk. "Chara...wasn't the best person. They were filled with anger, and hate, but most of all, sadness. They never got a chance to tell me what had happened to them before they fell. I guess whatever happened to them, it was enough to make them... to make them climb a mountain that no one ever returns from."
"I never hated them though. They were always kind to our family and generous. All they wanted to do was to payback monster-kind for all the love they were shown, and to save them from the fate that was unfairly brought upon them. But once were reached the surface and came face to face with the humans, a side to them I'd never know appeared. It was like they went blind from rage and emotion. But once that ran out they were empty, and thats where I took over."
He looks down and grasps the necklace at his chest. "When we combined our souls, the power was split between us. Chara fought back first, and then I stepped in. But I wasn't strong enough to fight the humans. Even knowing what they had done to Chara, the fear and desperate malice they had inflicted on them, I couldn't hurt a single one. So I picked up their body and came home, where they were buried here and I turned to dust, and later made into that demon Flowey."
"Chara wasn't the greatest person. They were hurt, and vengeful, and flawed. But so was I, so am I, and I just wish I had the chance to save them like you saved me. I wasn't good enough for them, I couldn't heal them, no matter how hard I tried. I couldn't be the friend they needed, like you've been to me, Frisk. So the least I can do is mourn them while I'm still myself, while I can still feel this regret!"
Asriel fell to the ground, his sobs echoing in terrible might. His bright eyes almost glowed as the tears fell, and fell, and fell.
Frisk slowly got to their knees and wrapped their arms around the child. His words continued to run through their mind, over and over again. It had never been like this, not once. Always the same script, always that soul-shattering moment when they realized their was nothing they could do to save him. But now, there was.
"Asriel," Frisk whispered once he had calmed a bit. "Chara's here."
He tried to smile, but couldn't. "Yeah, I know. Their watching over us right? From...wherever they are."
Frisk shook their head. Chara had been quiet through Asriel's speech, but once he stopped and started to sob Frisk almost felt Chara trying to reach out for him. They couldn't, though, and when they realized this they were silent again.
So Frisk told Asriel. About the voice in their head, about all the jokes and guidance they had offered them, the dreams. At first, Asriel didn't believe Frisk. But when they remembered their battle and how Chara had been the one to give Asriel the memories that saved him, it all came crashing together. The final puzzle piece.
"So, what now?" He asked.
Frisk grinned, their hopes rising. "You know how you said that when you combined your souls, the power was split between you? I've been thinking, and I realized that without at least some form of a soul, Chara couldn't have for one, stayed around so long, and two, connected with me like this. The only way this could have happened is for Chara to still have a soul. Not a whole human soul, of course, because then they wouldn't have had to rely on me and my determination. So, my theory is that when you two combined souls, your souls split in two. One half of the soul would be monster and one half human. This is what you have now."
"So you both ended up in your body. When you both died neither of you could actually die, since human souls can last after death and you now shared their soul. When you became Flowey, you didn't have a soul because your other half wasn't there. The part of a soul you did have couldn't function properly because Chara wasn't with you. When Chara gave you those memories during our battle, it awoke the human part of your soul, and therefore gave you a full soul. How do you think you were able to last this long without turning into a flower?"
Asriel was speechless. "But then, if what you're saying is true, then what about the other two halves?"
"The other two," Frisk replied. "Are in me."
