A peaceful scene of love and life, the three children slept on, comfortable in just being in each other's company. They all had their trials and tribulations, but for now they were pushed aside. They had their demons, but they stayed at bay for these few moments of happiness with their best friends.

The trio were awakened by the scent of tomato sauce and a loud "SANS GET ME MY SPECIAL NOODLE SPOON IT'S TIME TO STIR THE NOODLES SANS!" from Papyrus.

Frisk laughed and sat up, rubbing the sleep from their eyes. Chara did the same, but more groggily than the ever-cheerful Frisk. And Asriel took a few tries to wake, even with Papyrus's constant yelling. Finally they all stood, smiling, and followed Papyrus's voice back to the campsite. In the time they had spent napping the monsters had set up many makeshift tents and shelters where they would spend the next couple of days. In the middle of the tents was a huge bonfire and many smaller fires surrounding it. The smaller fires all had various pots and pans sitting above, filled to the brim with noodles and sauce. Many monsters helped man the cooking spaghetti, including Papyrus and Sans. Undyne walked around and helped give advice to some, like "C'MON, MORE HEAT! BUILD THE FIRE TIL THE POT MELTS!" and "Papyrus, you're supposed to boil the water first, not the noodles." Alphys was working by a station with Toriel, handing out supplies and answering questions. Asgore was working with a few other monsters putting up the last few tents. The whole place was organized chaos, but somehow it all came together.

Frisk went and asked Papyrus if they could help with the cooking, and of course the answer was an ecstatic yes. Chara walked over and helped Toriel hand out blankets to different monsters for the night. Asriel helped carry tools for his dad while him and the bigger monsters built the shelters. The three worked tirelessly for an hour before finally Undyne declared the dinner ready.

Immediately the smaller fires were put out and monsters started setting out tables and blankets for their picnic. A long table was set up for the King and Queen, and that's where Asriel, Chara, and Frisk sat. Before Frisk sat though they asked, "May I ask some friends to join us, Miss Toriel and Mr. Asgore?"

The two both nodded happily and Frisk ran off. They came back with Sans, Papyrus, Undyne, Alphys, and even Napstablook and Muffet, and sat them all at the Royal table. Papyrus insisted that the royal family had to enjoy his spaghetti, a special batch made just for them. Though they expected the worst, it was actually quite delicious, and they all congratulated him. It was a celebratory time of laughter and smiles, even those long hidden. Those who felt that there was nothing left finally began to feel hope again.

Chara stood from the table. "Thank you for the meal, everyone, and thank you for the warm welcome back." They said, a pink blush filling their cheeks. "May I be excused?"

Toriel nodded and smiled at them, along with the rest of the table.

Chara steeped away from the group of people still enjoying their dinner. Some had already finished, like them, and were sitting by the fire with content looks on their faces. Chara walked away from them too, searching for some peace and quiet. After a little while of walking they found it, in a small oasis in the middle of the dense trees. A stream fed the place with cool water from the peak of the mountain and lilies and other plants grew in abundance. The place, with twilight falling and lightning bugs just starting to wake, was so beautiful Chara caught their breath.

Walking up to the pond's edge, the sudden urge to swim out hit them, along with their smell. They ached to take a bathe. Stripping their clothes in the damp grass, the ran and jumped right in the freezing water. Laughing, they came up for air. They were shivering but didn't care. It felt so good to feel cold, to feel the gentle caress of the water in between their toes, across their stomach, through their hair. They didn't ever want to leave this little heaven.

But soon the cold became slowly more uncomfortable. They hurriedly washed themselves as best they could and stepped out into the much warmer air. They sighed, realizing they had nothing to dry off with, so they just used their sweater and changed into their shorts and undershirt. While they pulled their shirt over their head, they heard a sharp crack from behind them. They turned quickly to see a figure step out from the woods.

It was Frisk. "S-Sorry! I didn't know you were- I didn't see anything- I just wanted to . . . check on you, make sure you were okay." Their tan skin was flushed and their flustered state made Chara smile.

"It's okay, don't worry. Thank for c-coming. I missed you." Now Chara was the one who was flushed.

Frisk grinned. "I'm right here, silly." They came and sat down on the grass, and Chara followed suit.

"I know, it's just different, you know? Don't get me wrong, I'm glad to be back, but it's weird to talk to you and have everyone else there to hear. I mean, sometimes I'll start to say something because of one of our inside jokes or whatever and then I stop because I remember Azzy's there, or Mom, or anyone. I dunno, it's just . . . I dunno, it's dumb." They finished, feeling like they said too much.

Frisk nodded and turned to them. "I know what you mean. When you were in my head, it was like we weren't afraid to tell each other anything. But now, just sharing a joke with one another feels intimate, like something no one else should see. I think part of it is being able to see your face, read your expressions, there's a lot of pressure there. To make you smile, to make you blush, I want to be able to see your happiness, and to cause at least part of it. But it's really hard, it's like getting to know you all over again."

"But, Chara," Frisk continued, carefully taking their hand, "I want to. I want to get to know you all over again, no matter how long it takes. I want you to tell me about your happiest memories, from the underground and even before then. I want to be a shoulder you can cry on when you need to let out all those emotions I see you holding back. I want you to play the piano for me, to write and compose that wonderful music I know you keep inside. I want you to be able to tell me about those scars, on your arms and on your heart."

Chara was speechless. They could only stare at Frisk, at this wonderful little miracle.

Frisk laughed a little, then gave Chara a bright smile. "I want to be your best friend, is what I'm trying to say. And I know you and Azzy are really close, and I would never want to intrude on you two-"

Chara interrupted them, finally finding their voice. The pulled Frisk too them, wrapped their arms around them, and told them, "You are the best thing that has ever happened to me. Asriel saved me, but you brought me back to life. You gave me more than determination, you gave me hope. Frisk I-I . . . . I want to be more than your best friend. I-I love you."

Frisk looked up at them with tears in their eyes. Chara was terrified, telling them these secret thoughts they had been harboring, holding back, but Frisk looked as if they were the best things they had ever heard.

"I love you too, Chara!"

And so finally, after a million days of waiting and searching and yearning, the couple leaned in close, and shared their first kiss.
