Dancing until the dawn brings a rush to your body. Exhaustion becomes irrelevant. Adrenaline sharpens the blurry memories and all your feelings are crystal clear.  Laughter sounds like song and smiles shine like sunshine. On nights like these, monsters and humans like them, were loving every moment of life.

Asriel pulled Chara and Frisk into another of their many dances, and neither of them objected. They laughed and laughed and took turns twirling each other. Chara was out of breath and sweating, but they were the happiest they had been in a long time.

Finally, when the sun had just started to peek out from the horizon, many of the group went off to their tents to sleep. The trio stayed for a little while, watching the sunrise and catching their breath. Chara sighed and laid down on the damp grass, face flushed. They closed their eyes and smiled.

Frisk yawned beside them and suggested they go to bed like many of the others. Asriel and Chara agreed and they went to find blankets for the three of them. Toriel was still awake and as cheerful as usually, if a little warmer from all the dancing.

"Hello my children, I thought you'd be off to sleep by now. You must be exhausted."

"Yes ma'am Miss Toriel, we were just heading off to sleep. Could you show us where our tents are? And help us get some blankets too?" Frisk rubbed their eyes as the spoke and Chara couldn't help but notice how cute sleepy Frisk was.

"Of course my children, come, I'll show you to your tent. I hope you don't mind, but with limited supplies on hand you three will have to share a tent. It might be a tight squeeze, but it'll only be for a day or two." She brought them to one of the smaller tents near the center of the camp. It already had three pallets setup inside, one for each of them.

"This is great Mom, thank you." Asriel leaned up and kissed Toriel on the cheek.

"Yeah, it's no problem Mother, this is perfect." Chara hugged Toriel from the side. Toriel looked a little overwhelmed for a moment, soaking in the affection from children she had long thought were gone. She closed her eyes and hugged the two, laughing softly.

"I love you two, so much." She said. She looked over at Frisk, who was standing awkwardly nearby. She gestured for them to join the hug too and they accepted happily.

"I love you too Frisk." Toriel kissed each of their foreheads, then stood. "Alright, you three go on to bed now. If you need me I'll be in the tent a few places down. Have a good rest, my children."

The three nodded and wished her a good night, even though it was already morning. They climbed into the blanket's warmth together. Chara sighed and laid on the hard ground, thinking it was the most comfortable they'd been in a long time. Besides those moments by the pond with Frisk. They closed their eyes and sighed.

Asriel began to snore almost immediately. Frisk and Chara turned to each other and laughed softly. Then Frisk found Chara's hand and they pulled together. They soon feel asleep too, wrapped in each other and listening to the rhythm of Asriel's snores.

Chara jumped awake, breathing heavily. They placed a hand on their chest. You're okay. You're not dead. You're here.

They looked to the side. Frisk was sleeping with a small smile, still holding onto their hand. Asriel was also sleeping peacefully. After they had calmed down a little, they laid back down carefully, as to not wake the two. What had awoken them? They couldn't hear any noises outside. They didn't remember having nightmares. Even so, they felt an odd sensation, a dark weight in their stomach. However, they decided to ignore it. They turned and closed their eyes, trying to fall back asleep.

It was a while of Chara lying there fully awake before they started to hear the sounds of others stirring. They decided to get up and carefully stepped over Asriel to reach the tent flap. They cracked it open to see a few monsters walking about. Some of them had strange, dazed looks on their faces. Others looked concerned, even worried. They spotted their parents standing off to the side. Asgore had his arms around Toriel, who was shaking.

Then Chara saw Sans, a ways away from everyone else. He looked like someone that desperately needed comforting, like something horrific had just happened. But Papyrus was not there with open arms, ready for him to fall into. And nothing bad had happened, Chara was sure of it. They were on the surface, alive, happy.

So why did everyone look so frightened?
