I feel like we forget that Percy, Annabeth, and Grover were literally wanted criminals for a while in The Lightning Thief, until, after Percy's battle with Ares, he told everyone that Ares had kidnapped them and taken them all over the country until Percy heroically stole a gun from him and battled him on the beach. Afterward, tourists raised enough money for them to catch a flight to New York, and Percy went on national TV and told everyone that Gabe was giving away free appliances from his store.
