Shizuo POV
As I storm away from the shocked informant, my temper gradually fades. I can't tell why I feel this way; the way I acted felt different than usual- more of a bitterness rather than pure annoyance. I observe my hands. My hand is indented with lines from Izaya's clothing and my fists so tightly clenched that my nails had pierced through a few layers of skin and it stings.
I hear footsteps behind me, light and casual. Spinning around, my nose makes hard contact with a small black-haired head. Grimacing, I rub my throbbing nose and stare down at the other victim, who was small enough that the impact had knocked him over completely.
"Damn," Izaya says, half laughing through his wince, blood trickling down his forehead. "You've got a hard nose, Shizu-chan."
"You've got a hard head," I retaliate. "What the hell are you following me for?!"
Izaya gets up and brushes dust and small rocks off of his black clothes. People around us stare cautiously- they must not be used to us talking without trying to kill each other.
"What, did I ruin your dramatic exit?" He says teasingly. I stay silent. "I just wanted to pay you back for that little present you gave me."
The streets become empty as the sun begins to set, casting a warm orange light over the city and reflects in the informant's eyes. There is a warm mixture of brown, red, and orange in his irises.
"I don't want any present from you," I growl. "Leave me alone."
Izaya shrugs and at the same time, his phone buzzes in his pocket. He holds up a finger to me as if he were putting me on hold and my glare deepens. I watch him read the email slowly and carefully, his expression changing from smug to solemn serious. The informant's body goes rigid and he looks around, quick and attentive like a newborn faun in the middle of a dark forest. I decide not to approach him and turn anyway; whatever it was that was spooking the flea, he probably deserved it.
"Shizu-ch-"
Izaya's voice cuts clean off, suddenly and sharply. I glance over my shoulder and find an empty street, the informant nowhere in sight. I roll my eyes and keep walking forward, a little faster this time; the flea's probably gonna ambush me soon. It sounds like something he'd
do but..."Something seems wrong," I think.
As I make my way down the street, my mind is interrupted by a small buzzing noise on the ground from behind me, vibrating against hard asphalt. Slowly, I turn and stare in the direction of the sound, a feeling of dread creeping up my spine. A small black object rests on the pavement behind me. Walking up to take a closer look, my dread is confirmed; Izaya's phone.
I jump as the phone begins to buzz again, the caller ID blocked. My conscience tells me to leave it alone but I answer anyway, putting the phone up to my ear.
"He isn't here, call back later," I say.
"I know."
The man's voice on the other side is calm and smooth, irritating me for some unknown reason.
"Send a message for me, will ya? Tell Dougen Awakusu that we've caught the fish with the gold."
The call ends with that and I stare confusedly at the phone in my hand. There is an eerie aura in the air, heavy enough that I can't- won't- move.
Anger surges through my veins like a wave during a storm and in the midst of evening, I sprint to Shinra's apartment.
