"Welcome!" The owl shouts.
"Thank you. But what's your name again?"
"Uh...Don. We've known each other for 2 years now? You really don't remember?"
"We haven't seen each other in a while."
"I saw you last week."
"Umm... huh, that's....uh... I don't remember that, it must of been some other dog."
"I came down and talked to you."
"Ya did?"
"You're not Bud, are you?"
"Uhhh...." He's on to me. What do I do? I have to think.
"Hey! Spike!" A porcupine approaches us.
"What'a ya want now, Don?" His jersey accent sent shivers down my little spine.
"This puppy is trying to pass as Bud!"
"He needs a way betta' disguise."
"Yea, I didn't believe it for a second." Lies, lies, and even more lies.
"If e' aint' Bud, who the heck is e'?" Spike glared at me, as if he was starring right at my shaking sole.
"I don't know. Who are you?" I remained speechless.
"Listen kid, tell us who you are or I'll feed you to the wolves." Not the wolves!
"I'm...I'm..."
"Spit it out pup!" The porcupine screams. "Not much of a talker, eh?"
"Um..."
"I'm gonna say this one last time, WHO ARE YA?!?!?" The porcupine punches my stomach, he then pins me to a wall. "Speak!"
"Buster. My n-n-name is Buster. I'm Bud's little brother."
"Where is Bud?" The owl asked.
"Um, he's gone."
"Tell us where e' is!"
"He's dead okay?!?!?" That really hurt to say that. It felt like my heart sunk down to my paws.
"Ya mean e's...dead?"
"Um, ya."
"Let him go, Spike."
"But e'-"
"Let him go. Now." The owl cut him off. Spike dropped me onto the ground and walked away. "Sorry about him. He likes to get what he wants."
"Yea, I can tell."
"Anyway, do you still wanna stay here over night?"
"Really?"
"Why not."
"Thank you."
"No problem. This can be your bed." He lays out some big leaves.
"Thanks, where will you be sleeping?"
"Right over there." He stretches out his long wings to point. "If you need me, let me know."
"When will you go to sleep?"
"Me? Oh, I don't sleep. Well, at night I don't."
"You sleep during the day? Why?"
"Because I'm nocturnal, which means I sleep during the day, and hunt for food at night. Bats, raccoons, and sometimes foxes are examples."
"Cool. I haven't slept in four days. I've been walking non stop. I wish I had wings like you."
"And I wish I had super sonic ears like you, but you should appreciate what you have. Instead of envying others for having things you don't."
"True. Again, thanks."
"And I'm sorry about Bud. If you don't mind me asking, what happened?"
"We were running across a highway and he tripped. He wasn't fast enough getting up. Then...um...he uh..."
"No no, I understand. It's rough times for you."
"Goodnight."
"Goodnight, Buster." Then he flew off.
