For several seconds, Thomas stared at me. A thick silence loomed in the air after the thunderous rumble of the Door closing. Night had fallen, and the walls towered over us.

" Makena why did you follow me in here?!" I could hear he the fear in his voice. There was more fear than anger even through he held a frown on his face. I looked down at my shoes as I ssat back against the closed doors. Rethinking about what had happen.

" No Makena!" I glared at him and struggled against his grip. Thomas had pushed me toward Newt, making me fall on the ground rather than Newt's chest. My heart stopped as I looked up to see him running to toward the doors instead me.

" No!" I screamed. At that moment I knew I couldn't lose him. Not again

Five feet.

I quickly pushed myself up. I had to run after him. I have to go with him.

Four feet.

Newt went to grab me but I already launched myself into a sprint. I made sure to run with all my might to get back to Thomas.

Three.

Newt and the others were screaming for me to stop. I ignored them and pressed on, almost to the door. Just a few more feet.

Two.

I squeezed past the connecting rods at the last second and stepped into the Maze and the doors closed.

Looking back at Thomas I quietly said in a hushed tone, " I couldn't lose you too...I-I...could lose you again..."

" Again?"

" I-," I was cut off by a sharp cry from Alby up ahead which snapped me and Thomas's attention back on Minho and Alby. I stood up and ran to the two Gladers.

Minho pulled himself up and was standing once again, but he looked terrible. He was sweating, all dirty, and had several scratches. Alby, who was on the ground, looked way worse off. His clothes ripped and tattered, his arms covered with cuts and bruises. Had Alby been attacked by a Griever?

" You two Slintheads," Minho said, "if you think it was brave comin' out here, listen up. You're the shuckiest shuck-faced shuck there ever was. You're as good as dead, just like us."

" We couldn't just stand there and leave you guys out here." I argued as I crossed my arms.

"And what good are you with us?" Minho rolled his eyes. "Whatever, Mak. Break the Number One Rule, kill yourself. See if I care."

" Thanks. Makes me feel so loved." I replied. Gosh he gets on my nerves.

Minho forced a laugh, then knelt back on the ground beside Alby. Taking a closer look at Alby, I realized just how screwed up everything was. Alby was on the brink of death. His dark skin was losing color fast and his breaths were quick and shallow.

"What happened?" Thomas asked.

"Don't wanna talk about it," Minho said as he checked Alby's pulse and bent over to listen to his chest. "Let's just say the Grievers can play dead really well."

This took us by surprise. "So he was ... bitten? Stung, whatever? Is he going through the Changing?"

"You've got a lot to learn" was all Minho said.
