it had become a hobby

a love

a need,

to wait on deck for the ships

coming near.

i'd shield my eyes

and watch their silhouettes

as they rocked against the blue water

and as the men all smiled toward the shore.

when some arrived, they'd grasp

one of the many

anxious girls waiting around me,

and i'd stand on the tips of my toes,

looking amongst the white uniforms

for him.

but he never-

never

came.
