some nights, when the gates were locked

and the harbor was unreachable,

i'd sneak through the bars and run through

the cold sand of the night.

the moon would shine down, and

i'd bask in it as others did the sun.

and i'd remember your lips

and your eyes

that gazed at me as the sky does the ocean

and the sailors at sea.

and i'd lay down,

with your promises in my head

and let out a cry of longing

for my caption.
