Close Moments and Close Calls"Mason, I-"
"What are you doing in here, Rosaline?" he asked, rubbing a hand over his face. He sounded irritated and I flinched.
"I'm sorry, I just-I knocked and you didn't answer so I wanted to check on you," I explained.
"And go through my stuff?" he added dryly, raising an eyebrow.
I felt my face flush. "I saw the post-its on the walls and wanted to look around. I'm sorry for prying."
With that, I ducked my head and hurried toward the door. But Mason caught my wrist as I passed the bed. He had moved to sit on the end when I hadn't been looking. He was wearing his usual skinny jeans, but no hoodie. Instead, he wore a navy blue t-shirt that fit against his chest snugly. He was more muscular than I originally thought, I realised, as I could see some of his muscles through the shirt.
"Lina . . ." he murmured, gazing up into my face. My heart stuttered and a swarm of butterflies erupted in my stomach. It was then that I realised that these feelings I had for Mason Herald were more than a crush. I really liked this guy.
I wanted to run back to my room, but couldn't bring myself to pull out of his grasp. "Mason, I-" I whispered, but stopped when Mase slid his hand into mine. Oh god . . . Did this boy seriously have no idea what he did to me?
My gaze flickered to his bright blue eyes, which were staring at me intently. "Lina, I have to tell you-"
The shrill sound of my phone ringing cut him off and made us both jump. Mason huffed out a deep breath and collapsed back onto the bed, letting go of my hand.
I pulled my phone out of my pocket and answered it. "Hey, Fi. What's up?" I asked, trying to make my voice sound as normal as possible, even though my entire body was shaking.
"It's Riley," replied a voice that was not my best friend's.
I frowned. "Why are you calling me from Fiona's phone? Is she okay?"
"She's in the hospital, I thought you'd want to know." There was some shouting on the other end and my heart sped up. Fi was in hospital? What the hell had happened? "You might want to hurry," Riley said, "she's going into surgery."
I hung up and dashed into my room to grab shoes. Mason appeared in his doorway as I passed his room and said, "What's going on? Where you going?"
I grabbed his arm and dragged him down the stairs. "I can't leave you here alone. We're going to the hospital, Fiona's in surgery," I explained, trying not to cry.
Mase didn't reply, he just grabbed grabbed my hand and let me lead him down the street.

Fi was asleep in her room by the time Mason and I got there. I walked in to find Riley hunched over in one of the two plastic chairs beside her bed.
"What happened?" I asked, sitting down.
Riley sat up and ran a hand through his hair. "We were messing around at the beach and I threw her into the water, but she didn't come back up. I thought she might have been just trying to scare me, but then I got really worried and started looking for her. That's when I saw the blood. She hit her head on a rock when she went under and was knocked unconscious. She has a massive cut on the back of her head, but she's otherwise okay."
I breathed a deep sigh of relief. I reached over and hugged Riley. "It's alright," I told him. "It's not your fault."
Movement in the corner of my eye caught my attention and I turned in my seat to find that Mason was gone.
