Seeking Answers and Sleepless Nights

It didn't take me long to catch up with Mason. He was walking, whereas I was jogging lightly. I slowed down once I'd come close to him. Where was he going?

It was quite cold by now and I pulled my cardigan tighter around myself again. I'd been following Mason for what felt like hours. Where the hell was he sneaking out to at 8:30 pm?

I followed him for only a little longer before we arrived at the cliffs above Highwoods Beach. I began to freak out a little as he neared the edge. What on earth was he doing?

I gasped as he leapt from the brim of the cliff. I rushed forward and watched as he splashed into the dark waves below. Thank god for that. But it was still dangerous to swim in the ocean at night, what the hell was Mason thinking?

I sprinted down to the beach, almost crashing into Mason on the way. "Rosaline?" he said, confused.

"Mason!" I exclaimed. "What the hell were you doing? You could have died!"

"You wouldn't understand!" Mason snapped, shoving past me.

"Well enlighten me!" I demanded, following him. "How on earth could you think jumping off a cliff was a good idea?"

He whipped around and glared at me. "It's none of your business, Rosaline! Stay out of it!"

I blinked. He was right. It was none of my business. I had no right to intrude in his life. I remained silent as we walked home and I swore to myself that I would stay out of things that didn't concern me.

Especially Mason things.

"No!"

What the . . .

"No! Stop! Don't . . ." It was coming from next door. Mason . . .

I got out of bed. I knew I'd promised not to be so intrusive anymore, but something could be seriously wrong.

I crept out of my room and gently opened Mason's door. Peering inside, I could just make out Mason thrashing around in bed, moaning and mumbling.

I hurried over, flicking the light on as I went. "Mason!" I called, trying to wake him up. He remained asleep. I grabbed his shoulders and shook him and his eyes snapped open.

"Rosaline," he gasped breathlessly. His body was hot and sweaty and I knew his heart would have been more like a steam hammer. Mason sat up, swallowed thickly and closed his eyes. But he opened them again before long. Whatever he was seeing was obviously horrifying.

I watched in sadness as a single tear silently made its way down Mason's face. Reaching out to him, I brushed his dark hair off his face. He wasn't wearing his hoodie now, so I could see that his eyes were a bright blue colour. And right now, so filled with fear.

"Mason . . ." I trailed off, not sure where to begin.

"I get nightmares, okay?" he whispered, averting his gaze. "I normally take sleeping pills to keep them away, but I ran out. I'll get more tomorrow so I won't disturb anyone again. Sorry that I woke you up." With that, he got up and walked out onto his balcony. That was my cue to leave, so I sighed quietly and went back to my own room.

I hoped Mason would be okay.
