Mom and Mason

I was still awake when mom came home. It was 2 am and Riley, Fi and Mason had all already gone to bed. But I was in too much pain to sleep.

"Rosaline? You're still awake?" mom asked as she walked into the living room.

"Yeah," I replied, "I couldn't sleep."

"Do you need more painkillers? I can get you some."

I nodded and thanked her. I sighed when she left the room. She was still motherly toward me, but she was distant. I think she blamed me for Mason almost dying since I knew he was cutting and didn't tell her.

When mom returned with the painkillers and a glass of water, she said, "I'm going to bed, Rosaline. Try to get some sleep."

"He doesn't blame me," I said I her as she walked away. "Mason. He doesn't blame me for what happened. So why do you?"

"I don't-"

"Yes you do, mom. Don't lie to me. I know you hold me responsible."

Mom sighed and came over to sit on the end of the sofa. "You know the risks when it comes to that kind of behaviour, Rosa. You know the statistics. You could have done something and you should've. But you didn't and the boy in my care almost died because of it. Now my parenting ability is being questioned because I didn't notice that he was having thoughts of suicide."

I blinked. I hadn't realised that. But then again, she never really talked to me. "Mom, I'm sorry," I whispered. "I didn't mean for that to happen, I just-Mason asked me not to tell anyone and he was so broken and sad . . ."

"I know, Rosa," she replied warmly. "I know."

The light streaming through the living room window woke me up in the morning. I'd managed to get to sleep around 3 am and I'd had the weirdest dream.

I stretched and reached down for my crutches. Standing up, I slowly walked over to the kitchen for breakfast. Fi and Riley were already inside, cooking god knows what. All I knew was that it smelt good. "Good morning, Rose!" Riley called. "Do you want to wake up Mase and invite him down for some food?"

I glanced over at Fi, who shrugged and went back to poking whatever was on the stove. I guess she was trying to forgive him in her own way. I made my way up the stairs, proud of myself for being able to navigate them so easily on my own, and knocked on Mason's door.

He answered it quickly and stood before me wearing only black sweatpants. His bandages were off and I could see the healing cuts on his wrists. Staring at his still surprisingly muscular chest, I lost my train of thought.

I was vaguely aware of the fact that Mason was smirking at me but I couldn't tear my eyes away. "Lina, you're staring," he said with an amused tone to his voice.

It was then that I realised I was probably creeping him out. I blushed and looked anywhere but at his face. "Sorry! Uh, Riley wanted me to ask you if you wanted to join us for breakfast . . ."

I trailed off as Mason took a step toward me, wrapped an arm around my waist and pulled me to him . . .

Hey, guys! What is this, the fourth or fifth update today? I just have so many ideas for this story now that I'm past this Writer's Block! I don't have chapters planned on paper anymore, so please forgive me if there are plot holes but after I've finished writing the entire thing, I'll go through and fix everything up!
