Summer's Over and Someone's Gone
"I can't believe the summer passed so quickly!" Fiona moaned as we piled out of her brother, Ethan's car.
I rolled my eyes at her complaining but I actually couldn't agree more. It didn't feel like it had been three months since mom had dropped the Mason bomb on me. Speaking of Mason . . .
"Lina?" came the whisper from behind me. I turned to see Mason tugging the sleeves of his hoodie down further over his hands. I walked back over to him and grabbed his hand, weaving my fingers through his.
"It'll be okay," I promised, smiling gently. He squeezed my hand tightly and attempted a smile but it ended up being more of a grimace. He took a deep breath as we walked into the administration building to get Mase his schedule and locker number.
He was going to need me today and I would be there for him.

I didn't see Fi again until lunch. I was in four of six classes with Mase but only two with Fiona and those were both after lunch.
"I don't get it," she exclaimed as Mason and I sat down in the cafeteria. "Where is he?"
"Riley?" Mase asked her. I was proud of him for involving himself in the conversation. I guess he was becoming more comfortable around my friends. Or rather, Fiona. Riley wasn't anywhere to be found.
Fi nodded. "He hasn't even texted me back." She hung her head sadly.
I reached across the table and grabbed her hand reassuringly. "I'm sure there's a perfectly good reason."
"What if he doesn't want to be with me anymore? What if he's avoiding me?"
"No offence, Fiona," Mase cut in, "But I don't think Riley would skip school because he wanted to break up with you. I think he would just break up with you."
I nodded my agreeance and Fiona slumped in her chair. "Then I'm back to square one."
I excused myself and went outside for a minute. Pulling out my phone, I opened Riley's contact and called him. I'm sorry, the number you have called is no longer in service-
I hung up on the automated message and sighed, running a hand through my hair. What was going on with that boy?
I walked back into the cafeteria and found Fiona and Mason talking in whispers across the table. As soon as I made my presence known, they stopped talking and smiled at me. "Hey, Lina," Mase greeted me, placing his hand on the small of my back as I sat down next to him.
"Hi, Mason . . ." I replied hesitantly. "What's going on?"
Fi just smiled. "We were just discussing our common interests."
I grinned, even though I had the sneaking suspicion that she was lying. "Great! What are they?"
"That's for us to know," said Mase.
"And you to find out," Fiona finished.
"Oh, wonderful!" I commented sarcastically. "You're finishing each other's sentences."
Hey, guys! What do you think? Let me know in the comment! I love you all! <3
