Consciousness and Almost Confessions
"Rosaline! Rose! Wake up . . ."
The voice sounded garbled, distorted, dreamlike. And desperate. There was a pressure on my hand and a new voice spoke. "Lina, please . . . Wake up."
Even unconscious, I recognised Mason's voice and my heart recognised his nickname. It skittered and jumped. I became aware of an irregular beeping that slowly evened out.
"This is all your fault!" someone yelled. "She was looking for you on top of that cliff!" I recognised Fiona. "Why did you leave the hospital, anyway?!"
My awareness was slowly returning. With great effort, I opened my eyes. I was in a hospital room, the third one this week. I was lying on a bed, with Fiona standing at the end, staring at Mason, who was sitting beside me, head resting in his crossed arms on the edge of the bed. Neither of them had noticed that I was awake.
I tried moving but the pain shooting up my legs, back and left shoulder stopped me. "Ow," I muttered, which caught the attention of my friends.
"Rose!"
"Lina!" They cried in unison. I laughed a little, ignoring the pain in my ribs. "How are you feeling?" Mason asked, grabbing hold of my left hand gently.
I smiled at him. His was still wearing only his skinny jeans and t-shirt, his bandages exposed. Anyone who knew anything would know why they were there, so I thought he was brave not to cover them up. "Sore," I finally replied. "But otherwise okay."
I looked at Fi, who was glaring at Mason. "You are so lucky," she spat, before turning on her heel and leaving the room. I frowned. That was so unlike her, what was going on?
I looked back at Mase. He had the guiltiest, most distraught look on his face that I'd seen on anyone. Reaching forward, even though my shoulder was killing me, I grabbed his hand and held it tightly. "Mase-"
"She's right. This is entirely my fault." He sounded so sad and defeated and just broken that I felt my heart aching for him. I knew what it felt like to blame yourself for someone else's suffering, and it wasn't great. "If I hadn't left . . ."
"Hey," I said gently, "she's wrong. This isn't your fault. It's just really bad timing, that's all."
Mason smiled humourlessly and chuckled dryly. "Do you know why I left the hospital in the first place?" When I shook my head, he continued. "It's because I was jealous, or envious. I know there's a difference between those two, I can just never remember what it is-"
"Mason!" I interrupted his rambling. "What are you talking about?"
He stared at me with his blue eyes that made my heart melt the tiniest little bit. "Lina, surely you know."
I glanced down and back up at him. "I have a feeling but I need you to say it. I don't want there to be any chance that I'm wrong."
He nodded and took a deep breath. But before he could say anything, mom walked through the door. "Rosa, you're awake." She sounded beyond relieved.
"Yeah, I have been for a little while now," I replied as I watched Mason out of the corner of my eye. He blew a heavy breath out of his nose and closed his eyes, trying not to get frustrated.
"That's good," mom said. "You should be able to come home tomorrow if you keep healing the way you have been."
I smiled and nodded and sighed disappointedly when mom took Mason home with her.
