Interrogations and Unwanted Guests

"ROSALINE! HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO ASK A QUESTION?!"

I sighed as I heard Fiona screaming from downstairs. I watched as Mason closed his eyes in frustration and felt the muscles in the arm that was around my waist tense up. I slipped away, my unspoken apology conveyed in my eyes.

I tried to settle the nerves in my stomach from being pressed up against Mason's naked chest as I manoeuvred down the stairs. It wasn't until I'd reached the bottom that I realised that Mason hadn't answered my question.

I closed my eyes and breathed a sigh through my nose. "What are we eating?" Mason asked from behind me as he came down the stairs, slipping a t-shirt on as he went.

I laughed. "I have no idea but it smells great."

So the four of us sat down to a heavy breakfast of scrambled eggs, French toast and bacon. Fi seemed to be slowly warming up to Mason and Riley actually got him to laugh. He kept glancing at me and smiling and I kept blushing and looking away.

After we'd all finished eating, Fiona volunteered the two of us to clean up, so Riley and Mase went into the living room while we cleared away the plates. "So, what's up with you and Mason, then?" Fi asked.

I blinked, surprised not only by her question but also her perceptiveness. "What do you-"

"Don't play dumb, Rose," she said with a smile and a raised eyebrow. "I know you, remember? Your face was bright red when you came down those stairs."

I chuckled and blushed at the memory. "Yeah, I know. I guess the truth is that I like him. A lot . . ."

Fi groaned. "I was completely expecting that answer but it still pains me to hear it. Rose! He's emotionally unstable! You know you can't date someone like that!"

"I know that, Fiona!" I snapped, angry that she would bring that up again after such a long time. "But I can't exactly help how I feel."

Fiona glared at me. "Well, for your sake, Mason's and mine, try."

I was saved the task of replying by a knock on the door. I took a couple of deep breaths on my way to the front entryway and opened the door to an unfamiliar face. "Hi, can I help you?" I asked.

The woman was tall, with pale skin and long, dark hair. I knew even before she opened her mouth. I knew by her eyes, the same bright blue that I'd come to love. "Hello," she said in an English accent, "is this the Jones' residence? I'm Barbara Herald. Mason Herald is my nephew." Then she smiled so sweetly that I could feel my teeth rotting.

I felt my stomach flip in fear as her story was confirmed. "Aunt Barb?" asked Mason's incredulous voice from behind me.

"Mason!" she exclaimed with a smile. "It's been so long!" With that, she shoved past me, the girl on crutches, and enveloped Mason in a hug that his eyes told me he desperately wanted to get out of.

He didn't like this woman, and yet, we all knew she could take him away.
