*Theo*
Her words leave me stunned and all I can do is watch her as she works away in the kitchen, making supper for the three of us. She doesn't acknowledge me at all while she works away. The air smells wonderful and I try to see what she's cooking, but when I get closer she shoots a glare at me. "Mr. Parker, please do not be a snoop." she says it so sharply that I back up away from her. Maybe I shouldn't have told her about my no dating rule, because I know that I truly want to be with her.
I sigh and leave the kitchen, entering the living room to see Lilac watching me. Her bright eyes shining with knowledge that I have no clue where it possible came from. "Sir, I must ask you something." I nod my head and take a seat on the floor across from her. "What can I help you with?" I say and gaze into eyes that are nowhere near the same as Shadow's and I briefly wonder how they are related. "Do you have feelings for Shadow?" her question surprises me.
"Why ever would you ask that?" she shrugs and glances at the kitchen door, closed firmly to hide the beautiful girl in my kitchen from me. "I've seen the way men look at her, and you look at her in slightly the same way, but with more love then longing." her small voice is strong and confident, as if she truly knows what she is talking about. I smile sweetly at this girl, knowing I cannot bring myself to lie to her face. "Yes, I have feelings for your sister, but I cannot allow myself to act upon them. She is my maid, my helper, and your sister. I am allowing you both to stay with me and I cannot destroy the safety of a small child, nor would I ever wish too. Also, she does not feel the same as I do."
I shake my head and lean it on my hands, elbows firmly planted on my thighs. She rolls her eyes and walks over to me. "You will hear the truth when she sings." is all the child says before heading to help her sister cook in the kitchen, thus leaving me alone with my demons. I sigh and flop onto my back on the old sofa, ready to dose off while they finish supper.
I wake shortly after, and the food is ready. We are currently having homemade chili and I dig in. I haven't had chili in ages. My dear mother used to make it for me when I was a small child, but stopped when father had demanded it of her. I shake my head slightly, trying to clear it off the brutal memory of my parents. Instead i focus on saying thank you to the two people who cooked for me.
I sit across from Shadow and Lilac. They sit close together and I feel weird watching the two of them. I was an only child, and never knew what it was like to have a sibling to love and look out for. The pure love that radiates between them is unmistakable, and it is also slightly suffocating to me. We eat in silence, staring at nothing but our food. Finally I work up the courage to talk to her.
"What made you come to Crimson City?" I ask, intrigued by the fact that she chose here to live. It is known for a high crime rate and horrible people. Not very child friendly. "I came for you." she answers me, and my spoon clatters into the bowl of chili. "You came...for me?" she nods her head and looks down at Lilac. The child mouths something at her and she sighs. "Why did you come for me?" I ask, and she sighs again. "Because I didn't have a choice."
Lilac glares at her, and Shadow nibbles at her lower lip. "Tell him the truth. I already know your secret, now he deserves to know." her voice is strong and powerful, and I am impressed. "Fine." Shadow says and turns her full attention to me. "I came for you because I need to save you. I know that you want to die, and be the one to end yourself, and I am here to save your life."
I feel my eyes widen, and I stare at her in surprise. What the hell is she talking about? How could she ever possibly save me? She doesn't love me, why should she care? Unless someone is paying her to care.
"I don't want your pity Shadow. I'm fine the way I am." I say and push back from the table angrily. I storm toward my room and away from her. But I can still hear them talking in the kitchen.
"Lilac, what am I to do? I told him I didn't love him, and now it's over. I'll never go home again."
"Shadow, please. You know you love him, tell me why'd you lie?"
"I was scared. I'm not supposed to love him. That's why I was sent here, sent to save him, because I fell for him."
A chair scraps across the floor and I hear her sigh in frustration. "It's over Lilac. I failed. God isn't going to let me back into Heaven if I don't save him. But I...I don't want to lose him. What do I do?" I hear Lilac get up and I can tell by the light footsteps that she's moving to her sisters side.
"You tell him everything." she says and I wonder what she means. "Everything?" Shadow squeaks and I start slightly. Why would she be so scared? "Yes. You must tell him how you became an Angel, and why you fell."
