I ate some of the rich food that was laid out for us as Finnick talked to the others, I nudged him when I looked outside and he just nodded. He said something that gained the absolute interest of the people at the table so they didn't even notice me excuse myself from the table, I walked out the entrance door and went to the elevator. I zipped up to the top floor with the help of an avox who didn't try to stop me.
I found the door to the roof, it was slightly ajar and opened to a few stairs, It reeked of liquor. I closed it behind myself and walked up. It was beautiful, like a hidden garden filled with beauty, I could hear wind chimes a small distance away, It just gave more beauty to the place. The night sky made it even better as the moon cast a bright glow over the city, mixing with the artificial lighting. It was amazing, more than words can describe.
"Abernathy?" I asked to the seemingly empty garden, I know why he brought me up here, the wind chimes would block out any conversations that were unwanted to be heard by others. "right here Sweetheart." He said, emerging from a glass room of sorts that seemed to hold the wind chimes captive. I walked over without a word." Why would you want a simple girl from district four to meet you up here in this private sanctuary?" I asked with a slight smirk forming. Oh was I anything but a simple girl from district four.
"From what I can tell Sweetheart, you are much more than a girl from district four, why would a 'simple girl' tell me ... riddles, you know what sweetheart, your name is no longer Alia O'dair to me as I can't seem to figure out why you know me." He spoke softly, almost dangerously soft. " Well you'd be right about my name not being what it seems, I'm surprised though Abernathy. Actually, I'm hurt that you could just forget me like that. It's only been a few years since I was that short-tempered, baby-faced girl so I am genuinely hurt that you could just tick me off your mind as another one dead, I'm sure you did the same with.. what was his name again? Oh, Hartley! that's it, yeah you remember him, just not me." I ended my talk still upset that he still didn't get it!
~ Haymitch's Pov ~
Who was this girl, It's like I know her in a sort? Ugh. I took another swipe for the glass that held my alcohol, I can't seem to get her out of my head as I try to piece together what she said. Something about her name, not her face... what good does a name like 'Alia O'dair' do? I stood up and walked out, I need answers from this girl, now. I got to the stairs and threw the glass in my hands to the wall, shattering it instantly. I left the door open slightly as I doubt she's been here before, I walked into the glass room, filled with wind-chimes.
"Abernathy?" A sweet voice questioned the bare room, I walked towards her. " Right here sweetheart." She walked towards me with a small smirk." Why would you want a simple girl from district four to meet you up here in this private sanctuary?" She is so frustrating! "From what I can tell Sweetheart, you are much more than a girl from district four, why would a 'simple girl' tell me ... riddles, you know what sweetheart, your name is no longer Alia O'dair to me as I can't seem to figure out why you know me." I spoke in a softer voice, almost as if I were trying to lull her into a false sense of security. What she said next shocked me, she spoke whilst circling me almost threateningly.
Oh, Hartley! that's it, yeah you remember him, just not me." I closed my eye with a sigh, how did this girl even remember a kid from 12 in the 71st games, he was almost as stuck-up and stubborn as the girl that year, the one who nearly made it for 12, Aliara Mellark. We all believed in her yet the boy who had killed her, well he won, he took our hope. I grabbed her wrist."Look sweetheart, who are you and tell me right now, I brought you up here because we can't be seen or heard, and how dare you mention that boy, how dare you mention any of them, I go through enough knowing that each year two kids come through with me and don't go back home." She froze at my words.
"I-if you really want to know who I am, nobody won the 71st games because there are still two tributes alive yet not many people even know that! yes I was hit with a spear, yes I was taken out, But I did not die, I was sent somewhere supposedly dead, I was then sent to four under a new name, a new, older face and I went there with a new leg." I was speechless, here was the girl we all had hope for, the girl who brought the baker to tears just by thought, this was the girl we thought died, Aliara Mellark. "Prove it, sweetheart." I said stubbornly, not wanting to believe this, she lifted her shirt slightly to show a large round scarred mess of skin, she then unhooked a prosthetic leg from her limb and held onto me for support. this was her.
She quickly, with struggle put her prosthetic back on and compromised herself. "Now don't tell a soul or I'll make you go through hell as I've trained as a soldier so I know things that you couldn't imagine possible." She walked away leaving me stunned.
