Chapter 2

Kanine’s P.O.V.

There was a loud crash as Dylan flew through the wall, pieces of wood flying across the room. Lynx ducked right as a large plank of wood flew for his head. Slash growled as he lunged through the large hole in the wall, his claws pointed out in front of him. Moretta shook her head, pinching the bridge of her nose, her cat-like ears twitching as she walked away from the fight, clearly annoyed.

“Back off, man!” Dylan yelled, bracing himself as Slash tackled him, both of them tumbling across the rotted and dusty floor.

“Quit dissing everything I say!” Slash snarled back, swinging his fist across Dylan’s face. He hissed, his eyes glowing a crimson red as he kicked his feet up into Slash’s chest, sending him back through the wall, creating a second hole next to the first.

“Will the both of you knock it off?” I moaned, crossing my arms as Dylan stepped through the hole, his fangs bared.

“Stay out of it, Kanine!” Slash hissed as he swung his foot around, kicking Dylan’s shins and knocking him off balance.

“Excuse me?” I snapped, my wings ruffling with irritability. Dylan grabbed for Slash and held him in a choke hold, his fangs clenched tightly together.

“I agree with Slash for once, Kanine. Just stay out of it!” Dylan said, struggling restlessly with Slash.

“Don’t you talk to my sister like that!” my twin brother demanded, flipping Dylan over his head. Now I could tell Slash was pissed. His eyes glowed an exotic green, his large canines bared and his earthy brown, hawk-like wings spread wide in defense.

“Slash, come on. We need to continue discussing the plan,” I sighed, glaring at the two boys wrestling with each across the floor. Lynx had jumped up onto the fireplace, sitting beside Scarla as they both watched the two experiments fighting.

“Drop it, Dylan. There’s no point in this,” Shade spoke up, his arms cross across his chest as he stared at his brother, just as annoyed as Moretta and I were. I flickered a glare up at the dark, lean, vampire boy before storming into Dylan and Slash’s battle, prying my brother from his grip on Shade’s brother.

“Damn it, Slash, stop it!” I ordered, gripping his biceps as I pulled him back, his teeth still bared aggressively at Dylan. “You guys do this every time you have a disagreement. Knock it off!” I scolded, heading into the other room of the old apartment complex so that Slash could calm down. I heard Shade murmuring things to Dylan behind me.

That was us, the completely normal group of homeless teenagers. As if. We were the group of rogue experiments created in two of the three facilities that specialized in enhancing humans and altering them into monsters. Slash and I are sixteen-year-old twins that were raised in the Alcatraz Facility of San Francisco, California. We’ve been altered to have large, thirteen foot long wings, dagger-sharp retractable claws, and the ability to shift into large wolves.

Shade, Dylan, and their younger sister, Scarla, were also created in the Alcatraz Facility. They, however, were based off the idea of the mythical creatures, vampires. Though they’re equipped with fangs, they don’t hunger blood. They weren’t in the facility long enough to have received the hunger for it. But, they were there long enough to have been injected with a serum that gave them the ability to shift into large, winged, bear-like beasts.

Moretta and Lynx had both been raised in the Bermuda Facility. Moretta had been injected with exotic cat DNA for over eighteen years. Her hair was golden, streaked with black and bronze. Like Slash and I, she’s equipped with large, retractable claws and cat-like teeth. Her eyes looked like they belonged to a leopard, golden and lightly sprinkled with black flecks. Pointed ears sat on the top of her head and the feline experiment had all the reflexes of all the wild cats known to mankind.
