Chapter 3

Kanine’s P.O.V.

The night was young, the sun just disappearing behind the towering sky scrapers of San Francisco, turning the sky a deep magenta, the clouds lit bright orange with the last rays of the dying sun. Slash and I stretched our wings out, preparing them for a night of long distance flying as we waited for Moretta and the vampire kids to finish packing. Lynx was jumping around the deserted street, eager to get going. Well, that made one of us.

“Are you scared?” Slash asked me, shaking out his stiff wings.

“Yeah, but I think we have a chance. We just got to stick with the plan and hope we can work together. One of us screws up, we all do,” I replied, giving my wings a few flaps so they can get used to the motion. It felt like it’s been forever since we’ve last flown.

Probably because I haven’t hit the sky since the day after the raid when I flew into the city for some blood. My new hunger for it came to Slash as a huge surprise and though he’s tried to break it over the two months, it’s just not possible. Eventually, I just began hunting hobos and junkies, knowing no one would miss them as much as the people in the city.

“Fingers crossed,” Slash sighed, cracking his neck. Behind us, the old, rotted stairs of the rotting apartment complex creaked and Slash and I turned to see Moretta and the vampire siblings filing out the door.

“Everybody ready or do we need to get final sissy fight out of the way?” Moretta asked, rolling her eyes as she hitched her backpack onto her shoulder. Slash and Dylan exchanged a glare before both giving a stiff shake of their heads.

“Then let’s get going,” Moretta said resentfully. “Who am I riding with?” she looked at each of us. Because her and Lynx couldn’t fly, one of us would have to carry one of them and alternate though the journey.

“I’ll be glad to,” Dylan smirked, winking at Moretta.

“No thanks. I’ll ride with Slash,” she grimaced, taking a step closer to my brother. Dylan and Slash were quick to shift, their hackles raised and their claws scraped against the cement. Shade, Scarla, and I quickly followed. Moretta jumped onto Slash’s back, getting a tight and firm grip around his neck. Lynx was quick to make the decision and hopped onto my back, grabbing at tuffs of fur around my neck to get a good grip.

With a kick of my hind legs, I jumped into the air, the wind rushing through my fur and wings taking the stress from my muscles. I sighed, the cool night air making my hairs prickle. Slash and the others soon appeared on either side of me, their wings beating silently through the air.

I glanced below, watching the old buildings disappear behind us; most likely we’ll never lay our eyes on them again. However, all the buildings soon disappeared behind us, turning into endless desert, the midnight air sending chills down my spine. Lynx tightened his arms around me, trying to bury himself into my thick fur. Moretta was doing the same. Unfortunately, the cold wasn’t the only problem that night.
