Chapter 4
Kanine’s P.O.V.
When the sun came up, we continued by foot, our abnormal figures in the sky to visible. We needed to take every precaution to prevent any attacks from the Scientists. Now, we traveled along the side of the road, clothing concealing our ‘special’ features so that we took the appearance of a group of somewhat shady kids.
Since last night, I haven’t heard Helena in my head. It’s been only me and my own thoughts, and that’s how I want to keep it. I’m sure it was just anxiety and fear that stuck a cord and made me imagine her voice. But, it was too real for comfort.
“Shade, I’m hungry,” Scarla suddenly moaned, breaking the silence that had lingered between us for the past few hours.
“There are some granola bars in the green bag,” I pointed to the backpack that clung to Dylan’s back. Continuing to walk, Shade unzipped the bag and reached in for one of the snacks when he shuddered, peering into the bag.
“What the hell is this?” he pulled out a plastic baggie filled with dark crimson liquid, my mouth beginning to water.
“A bag of blood,” I murmured, trying to stop myself from drooling as he held up the blood in front of me. I noticed Slash flinch as he walked a few feet ahead of me while Moretta and Dylan grimaced. Lynx just smiled like it was the coolest thing in the world.
“Where did you get that?” Dylan asked, glanced back at me.
“From the homeless guy that lived in that cardboard box on Old Fields Road,” I muttered, diverting my gaze to my feet. My fangs elongated, poking sharply at my lip.
“Shouldn’t have asked,” Dylan sighed, Shade carefully placing the baggie back into the backpack and pulling out a granola bar, handing it to Scarla.
“It’d be best just to keep your mouth shut all together,” I growled, unable to bite back the remark. He glared back at me for a second, his fists clenching at his sides, but stiffened when a growl sounded from Slash, his feral green eyes narrowed on the boy.
“Down boys,” Moretta demanded, rolling her eyes at the two of them as they continued walking, bearing holes into each other. “Let’s try not to kill each other in less than a day,”
“I’m surprised we made it this long,” Shade drawled, glancing quickly from Slash to me and back forward.
“That makes two of us,” I hissed through clenched teeth, my fangs intimidatingly sharp.
“Will all of you shut up?” Moretta snapped back at us, her eyes glowing gold. “Even Scarla and Lynx are acting more mature than you and they’re twelve and seven!” The two small kids just beamed up at the four of us, taunting us with that statement.
“Well they’ve never been killed, have they?” I shifted my glare quickly to Moretta before settling it on Dylan, feeling my wings begin to twitch under my jacket. At the word ‘killed’, Slash’s growl grew, sounding like a feral wolf.
“You’re never gonna let that one go, are you?!” Dylan snarled, hesitating his step as he diverted his spiteful glare to me.
“You killed me! How am I gonna let that one go!?” I questioned, furious at the pathetic question. Dylan’s jaw tightened.
“He was under the influence of the Scientists,” Shade defended him. I noticed Slash’s claws were slowly growing out, his teeth clenched tightly as he glared between both vampire boys.
“Of course you’d say that!” I snarled. “You stood by and watched as he tore my wings off my back!” I screamed, about ready to lash out at the boy. But Moretta beat me to it. She slapped both Dylan and Shade across the face, along with me and Slash.
“Another word and I slap you with my clawed hand,” the cat-girl threatened with a look of irritation and annoyance clear on her face. Lynx snickered, but quickly faded when Dylan threw him a look and Scarla tried muffling her giggle as Slash flashed a quick glare in her direction.
“I swear to god, it’s like some screwed up version of Desperate Housewives, watching you guys snarl and lash at each other!” Moretta exaggerated, throwing us a final glare before taking the lead again.
“Please, I think the women from that show are even more messed up than us,” Dylan huffed under his breath. He glanced at Slash and I. “And that’s saying something,”
