Chapter 5
Slash’s P.O.V.
The sun was just setting behind the mountain range, the air still hot. Kanine and I removed our disguises, letting our sweaty and cramped wings breathe. The Rocky Mountains were just ahead of us and we weren’t planning on walking, it’d take up too much time.
“Pass me that bag,” Kanine asked, pointing towards the green bag Dylan had set down. Grabbing it, I tossed it to her. She eagerly snatched it, her eyes pulsing crimson. I watched in curiosity as she pulled out that little bag of blood, her wings twitching anxiously. She pierced the plastic with her fangs, the liquid pouring into her mouth and a some gliding down the corners of her lips as she zipped the bag back up, tossing it to me. I numbly caught it as I watched Kanine gorge the blood, shivers running down my spine. I was never going to get used to that.
Kanine glanced up at me, her eyes returning violet. With the back of her hand, she wiped away the blood that dribbled on her chin.
“Sorry if I disgust you,” she stated darkly, her eyes casting away guiltily.
“No, don’t be,” I forced an accepting smile. “I’m just not exactly used to it yet,” I offered quietly, getting a nervous nod in response. She shook out her wings as she stuffed her layered clothing into her military bag. I sighed, glancing back at Dylan. It was because of him my sister was like this, a confused blood-sucker.
“Come on, we need to cover as much ground as we can before the sun comes up. We don’t wanna be stuck in the freezin’ mountains all day,” Moretta called, specifically to Kanine and me because we were the only ones who haven’t shifted yet. Dylan and Shade were already down on all fours, their wings tearing out of their furry backs. It was best to go in animal form through the freezing mountains. It would be freezing up there throughout the night.
“Yeah, yeah. Don’t get your claws in a twist,” Kanine remarked, rolling her eyes as she shifted, a black wolf replacing her human figure. Moretta hissed as she mounted Dylan, grabbing hold of tuffs of fur around his neck. Lynx, with a wide childish grin on his round face, ran to Kanine, eagerly climbing onto her back, practically choking her as he wrapped his littler arms tightly around her. She just nipped his arms playfully until he loosened up, fixing his posture on her so that they were both comfortable.
Glancing back at everyone once, I shot into the air, my wings immediately catching the wind and sailing me higher. The cold air ran through my thick fur, feeling nice on my skin. The others quickly joined me; their silhouettes clear against the dark sky. Kanine flew close to me, the wind pushing all the fur back against her long wolf face. Lynx gripped her neck tightly, but not choking, burying his body into her thick black fur.
Dylan and Shade kept their distance, Scarla flying in between. Moretta was quietly murmuring things to Dylan, keeping a secure grip with one arm and gently stroking his ears with the other. Dylan now and again just nodded, the only way he could communicate with the cat-girl while in that beastly form.
