Chapter 6

Slash’s P.O.V.

I glanced back at Kanine, her lips pressed tightly together. Though the Colorado sky was freezing, she was the only one of us who hadn’t shifted, her arms exposed and collecting ice, but she didn’t seem fazed by it.

I returned my gaze ahead and noticed Dylan glaring at Kanine with aggressive eyes, his jaw clenched tightly. I snarled at him, forcing his glare onto me as he growled fiercely back.

“Don’t make me give the two of you a time out!” Moretta snapped, baring her own feline teeth as her pupils slimmed into slits. Shade threw both Dylan and I and irritated glare, his upper lip twitching and revealing a pointed canine.

“Guys,” Kanine’s voice, soft and uncertain sounding, called from behind. “Do you mind if we do some walking? My wing’s hurting a bit,” she said, her eyes glinting blue.

“I think a little walking will do some good,” Lynx agreed, looking a little green himself as he rested his head against Kanine’s upper back. Dylan and Shade exchanged a glance before losing altitude and descended towards what could only be the Grand Canyon. I watched as Kanine pulled Lynx into her arms and dropped straight down towards the dense trees. Scarla and I were right behind them.

“Some place to walk,” Dylan grumbled, staring up at the towering pines and blazing sun once we had shifted.

“At least we shouldn’t be easy to spot,” Shade said nonchalantly, glancing around as he thumbed the bark of an oak tree.

“Whatever, let’s just keep moving,” Kanine hissed, beginning to walk and quickly disappearing in the thick brush, the only sound was the crunching of leaves as she walked. I blew out a breath as I followed quickly behind her, taking notice that everyone else was hesitated before obediently tagging along.

“Slash,” I felt Scarla tug gently on my hand. Forcing a friendly smile to my face, I looked down at her to see what it was she wanted. “Is Kanine going to be alright?” she asked worriedly with big red eyes.

“Kanine’s fine,” I lied, broadening my fake grin. “She’s just a little shaken up.” I countered, glancing up at my twin sister. I was unable to ignore the twitching of her right wing, mysterious whispers coming from her direction. She was talking to herself. Scarla stared at me innocently for another second before retreating back to Dylan, clasping his hand. I looked up at the kid to see him glaring again. I rolled my eyes before turning back to Kanine and quickening my pace so I could catch up to her.

“Why are you being so effing persistent?” I heard Kanine whisper under her breath, her eyes flashing from violet to blue.

            “Kanine?”

“It wasn’t my fault! How was I supposed to know-,” I placed a hand on her shoulder as I repeated her name. At my touch, her eyes widened and I watched her claws flick out just in time to take a step back before she swung them at me.

“Kanine, what the heck was that?” I hissed, grabbing her wrist but continuing to walk, relieved that the others hadn’t seen Kanine’s attempted attack.

“Sorry,” she muttered. “You startled me.” My eyebrows furrowed as I stared coldly at her, her expression rock solid and primal. She didn’t as much blink as she stared back ahead, the corner of her mouth twitching, just like her wing.

Kanine’s P.O.V.

“Your brother can’t mind his own business,” Helena retorted. I growled at her, feeling the odd irritation in my wing that I knew was caused by the manipulator herself.

“Look who’s talking,” I snapped through bared teeth. “You’re inside my head aren’t you?”

“There’s a difference, Hothead,” I could just imagine Helena rolling her eyes. “I don’t necessarily have a choice,” she argued.

“Whatever. So, are you going tell me why we’re walking or not?” I muttered, my teeth clenched in irritation. She laughed dryly before she went quiet for a moment. Every passing second chopped off another ounce of my patients, my claws twitching to appear.

“Alright, look up in three… two… one.” I looked up, past the tree branches, and into the sky, my body becoming paralyzed as a black jet flashed by, extremely low to the ground and shaking the top of the trees. The vampires, Lynx, Moretta, and my brother had hit the forest floor, looking wide eyed in the direction the jet had flown.

“What the hell?” Moretta gaped, clutching Lynx closely to her body.

“Don’t worry. They’re not after you, yet,” Helena informed.

            “What are you talking about?”

“They’re after Kale,” she said sullenly. My wings twitched even more as the events from the night before flashed before my eyes, Kale’s hand firmly clasping the blade aimed for my eyes.

“Does someone want to tell me what the hell that was?” Dylan spat, his voice low like usual and very annoyed.

“They’re after Kale,” I stated before continuing forward, thinking they would brush it off and follow, but Slash was quick to firmly grasp my arm.

“How do you know that, Kanine?” he swallowed, a mix of fear and anger dripping off his voice. I forcefully pulled my arm away and glared at him, offended that he would question me like that.

“They flew right freaking over us and in Kale’s direction. Didn’t you notice the tattoos on the effing thing?” I improvised, though knowing I had indeed seen some writing along the side of the craft.

“What?” Shade asked softly, sounding concerned.

“Pompeii Discovery Group,” I spat at the Shade, crossing my arms. “Unless they’re going to Vegas to set up a mini exhibit it’s the Scientist wanting Kale back.” They all stared at me suspiciously, eyes narrowed and lips pressed tightly shut.

“Whatever you say, Bloodsucker,” Dylan sighed, pushing past Slash and I. I couldn’t bite back the snarl, my fangs elongated and bared fiercely. He scoffed as he rolled his eyes, turning back around and disappearing into the brush.

“Wow, he’s even worse than your brother,” Helena just had to butt in.
