Chapter 7
Kanine’s P.O.V.
The sun was touching the horizon and Helena’s voice was pounding against my brain like a hurricane, causing an awful headache. I was in no mood to fly another day, not even another hour. My wing was numb, the one that had been twitching nonstop all day.
“I think we should rest tonight. According to the map we studied, there’s a canyon ahead. We’ll need to rest up if we’re going to trek through it in a day.” I said, stopping and turning to the tired looking group of mutant teenagers. Scarla and Lynx made happy noises as they fell to the ground, Lynx already asleep on a pile of leaves and Scarla simply hugging the earth. Moretta and Shade sighed in relief as they lowered themselves to the ground, Shade grabbing Scarla as he slipped off his backpack and handed her something. Dylan, however, glared across the clearing at Slash who glared back. I glanced between the two of them, then winced as another pulse of pain caught my brain.
“Like cats and dogs.”
“Shut up.” I hissed, turning before I could receive a look from anyone. I heard Dylan sneer, but chose to shrug it off as I jumped up into the oak tree that towered over the group. Among the branches, a hollow was formed where several branched off at an awkward angle, but they formed a natural nest among the tree’s orange leaves. I laid my jacket across it and deemed it a bed. Above me, the silver moon spilled ominous white rays through the branches. The moon; sat there in the sky and watched the world go round. All the horrors we endure and the pain we suffer, yet the moon continues to glow. I didn’t know whether to consider it a beacon of hope, or a mockery of dread.
I glanced below me and saw Slash leaning against the base of my tree, his wings protecting his back from the rough bark of the ancient tree. I rolled my eyes; he’s too protective. I rolled over and held my back in the group’s direction; not that could see me anyway. Listening into the woods, the gentle hum of crickets lolled me to sleep and comforting darkness swept over my vision.
I was lying on a cold, smooth surface yet nothing was beneath me but darkness, like the rest of the area I awoke to. Slowly, I sat up, stretching my arms out. I glanced around the blank room, seeing nothing but continuous blackness. I froze when I heard wings fluttering. I spun around and found myself facing Slash who stood a few feet away. I wanted to go to him, to say something, but my body disobeyed, not allowing me to move from my spot.
As I stared at him from a distance, I realized something wasn’t right. He didn’t look right. He looked the same yet there was an ominous change that made a shiver clench my spine. I couldn’t place my finger on it; I couldn’t point out the difference.
Suddenly, a figure began to form behind him; fading in from the shadows. My eyes narrowed as the figure came into focus; it was Helena. She had the same knowing smirk she always had on when she was alive, that taunting smirk. I wanted to say something as she came up behind Slash, her gaze not leaving me, but my mouth would not move, neither would my legs. She put one hand on Slash’s shoulder, turning him towards her as she pressed her lips against his, snaking her arms around his neck. I was expecting him to push her away, attack, but instead, he deepened the kiss, wrapping his arms tightly around her waist, pressing her closer to his body.
