C H R I S T I N A
It is very dark tonight, at half past midnight. I wait under a damp oak tree by the train tracks, my skin slick from the humidity after the rainstorm. Where could she be? She is a little late, and the later the night grows, the more my patience thins. Maybe she lied to me. Maybe Tris doesn't want to be with me after all.
The thought makes me shiver. There is nothing more I crave now than the feeling of her lips against mine. It's been days since I felt them. I long to feel them again. We've been a complete secret since we first kissed. We fooled everyone into thinking we are just best friends, but really, we are something much more than that, something much more daunting and daring.
I will give her ten more minutes before I give up and go home. She deserves a chance, as do I, at love.
Five minutes pass, and the fog thickens and clouds the moon in the star-ridden sky. Maybe she isn't coming. I was a fool. My heart gets heavy and tears burn my eyes. I never thought she would just leave me here alone in the middle of the night when she could've said she didn't want to be with me in the first place.
But I'm not giving up hope yet. She's out there somewhere. She will come for me. I know she will.
Footsteps crunch against the wet grass and a thin but strong figure runs my way. I recognize that blonde ponytail swaying in the fall wind. Tris.
"I'm sorry I'm late," she breathes out. "I missed my alarm."
I smile in gratefulness and wrap my arms around her waist. She leans down and kisses my lips softly. Her warm skin smells of lavender and fresh soap, a signature scent of hers. I rest my head on her chest and she buries her nose into my hair.
This moment is perfect, almost too perfect. The feeling of her warmth pressing against my wet skin makes smile. For the first time, I feel complete.
The train rumbles down the tracks, and we pull away, still holding hands. We prepare to jump on as we run alongside it together. Tris jumps in first and pulls me in by my waist. We lean against the side, and laughs bubble in our throats, just like the day we first met, when we jumped off this exact train and into a whole new life. A life I have been so grateful to have. Meeting her was the best thing that has ever happened to me.
"I love you," Tris murmurs, stroking my hair. My heart swells.
"I love you, too." It comes out breathless but firm.
The train continues down its unknown path. I have no idea where it will take us, but as long as we are together, we will be okay.
