Waking up early Monday morning, I rolled out of bed and headed for my new bathroom. Letting the warm water tickle me and wake me up, I closed my eyes, hoping I could become invisible. I was not looking forward to going to school today.
After washing myself and stepping out of the comfort of my shower, I trudged back into my room and put on some clothes. I settled with a pair of colorful floral denim shorts and a white tube top and my light blue toms. I took my light blue toms everywhere with me. They were my babies. I quickly braided my hair into a messy side fish tail, I applied light makeup, grabbed my bag and new school supplies, and headed downstairs for breakfast.
"Oh, good, you're awake," my mom said once she saw me walk in to the kitchen. She was rushing around, filling up a thermos with coffee. "I'm running late and am about to leave. I was just going to come up and make sure you were awake."
"I'm up, no worries," I said, walking over to the pantry. I grabbed a small box of cereal and a couple granola bars. My mom and I hadn't yet gone to the grocery store to get actual food for meals. We were doing fine for now with what we brought from California. "So how are you getting to the elementary school?"
"Mrs. Owen was kind enough to give me a ride," my mom said, throwing last minute things in her bag. "Apparently she works near there, so she said she would give me a ride till our car got here. By the way, did you know she has a son your age?"
"Actually yeah," I said, stuffing some cereal in my mouth. "I actually met him the other day."
"Oh! Well never mind then," my mom said, a mischievous smile on her face. "Well I'll be off. Lucky for you, you don't have to get to school as early as teachers do."
"Good luck!" I said as she started towards the door.
"Same to you! Be friendly!" She called back. "Oh and if you can, could you stop by the grocery store and pick up some pasta and tomato sauce? Thanks."
Before I could even answer, she was already out the door. I sighed, knowing I would have to go buy food after school. While eating my sad excuse for a breakfast, I pulled out my phone and pulled up a map of how to get to my school. Luckily it wasn't very far. If I left early enough, I could walk there and make it with plenty of time to my get schedule and find my way to homeroom.
'Speaking of leaving early, I should probably go ahead and go, just to be safe,' I thought, sighing as I threw away my trash. A big part of me wanted to say 'screw it' and just go back to bed, but I knew I had to go to school. I would have to have the first day eventually. Might as well go ahead and get it over with.
I hoisted my back pack up onto my shoulder and headed towards the door. Once the house was all locked up, I made sure the map was still up and working before heading out. The whole time I was walking to school, I was paranoid that I would get lost and not find my way to school.
'If that happens, you can just call Luke,' a voice in the back of my head told me. That actually wasn't a bad idea. Since he lived right next to me, I had a pretty good feeling that we went to the same school. If all else fails and I get totally lost, I'll ask him to come find me.
Fifteen minutes later, I was walking up the side walk to my new school. There were already some people there, saying hi to friends they hadn't seen all summer and trying to figure our their classes. I kept my head down and ignored some of the watchful stares. I had a feeling today as going to be full of 'look at the new girl,' stares.
Glancing at my phone, I noticed I had fifteen minutes till the bell would ring. Surely that was enough time to find the front office and get to my first class.
Eight hallway turns, three dead ends, and four awkward class intrusions later, I finally found the front office. Sighing in relief, I glanced at the clock above the front desk, seeing it was seven fifty-five. School was starting in just five minutes, and I still hadn't gotten my schedule.
