He sits in silence after his last sentence. He doesn't elaborate, just says he's one of those. I want to push for what he means, but I know I should allow him to speak at his own pace. I rock him slowly again, my humming resuming of the song he seems to love. His head tilts to lie on my shoulder and he closes his eyes. Every now and then, he'll let out a hum of his own that matches mine.

The song was a lullaby that my mother used to sing to me every night. I love how open-ended the song was. I used to make stories up about how the king found his queen. I often enlisted my friends to act out the stories I had made. We would dissolve into giggles if I made the king and queen kiss. I had kissed Vik at the end of the song... HOLY SHIT I KISSED VIK!!

My actions come back to me through flashbacks. I groan in disbelief, I bit his ear! What is wrong with me?! It had just... felt right. Like I was meant to do it. Being around Vik, in general, felt right. Never in my life have I felt as strong a bond as I do with Vik. And I absolutely love it. For years, I have traveled the world, searching for somewhere I feel like I belong. I have never felt more at home than any other time in my life. With a little mermaid wrapped in my arms, the waves sloshing against the rocks, lulling us. I felt truly peaceful. Truly at home.

"I'm betrothed to a siren."

I am pulled from my musings at Vik's croaky voice. He stares directly into my eyes, searching for my reaction. I try to keep a neutral expression, but I know I failed when Vik cups both of my cheeks and kisses my nose. He's close enough so I can rub our noses together, savoring the contact. Any sort of contact with him sends my heart fluttering and fills me with warmth.

"Can you feel it, Josh?"

"Feel what Star?"

"The connection, the warmth, the longing. Can you feel it?"

"I do Star... And I love it."

He gently smiles and kisses me. Nothing too rough, just gentle and loving. I savor the affection, my heart filling with warmth. I pull him close, breaking our lips connection. He buries his face into my neck, his breathing tickling me as he exhales. He presses little kisses to the skin and I pinch his back playfully.

"I think we are soulmates."

I nod slowly, I figured we were. My mind replays our conversation and I frown remembering a certain part.

"Vik? What are we going to do? You are betrothed! To a siren! And on top of that, I'm a human. I can't live with you and you can't live with me!"

He simply raises his head and gives me a pitiful smile. His fingers begin glowing purple again as he raises his hands to my neck. As he presses them daintily against my skin, an ache fills the area. It becomes hard to breathe as he massages my neck. While this is happening, I glance down at his hands. On the inside of his arm, is a blue marking. Ignoring my neck, I seize his wrist and examine the mark. He curiously looks to where I am looking and his eyes widen once he spots it. He grabs my arm, and pulls back my sleeve, exposing the skin. There on my forearm is the same blue marking.

"We are really soulmates. These marks prove it"

"I always wondered why Simon covers his wrist. His mark must be there."

We both laugh at my stupid comment. We settle back into our cuddling position. The sun beats down on us and I take a deep breath. My neck aches as I inhale. I turn to Vik and raise an eyebrow as I cough a bit.

"I may have given you gills. They are temporary. Only last about three days. You can't seem them either. They aren't the best though. It's mostly so you can swim around with me, but you can't go too deep."

I hug him tightly, tears shining in my eyes. He wanted to try. He made it so he could show me some of his world... Maybe we can find a way for me to show mine.

"VIK?! WHERE ARE YOU!!"

A head peeks up over the edge of the rocks. Their eyes widen at us and they go to leave, but Vik gestures for them to climb up. They pull themselves up skeptically and I really shouldn't be surprised when a tail appears with them.

"What is it, Tobi?"

"Lachlan found out that you didn't come home last night. He's close to going on a rampage."

Vik tenses at the name Lachlan. Shaking once again overtaking his actions.

"Who's Lachlan?"

He faces me, staring directly into my eyes. The fear in them causes me to feel sick

"He's the siren I'm betrothed to."
